I've let DS have his own spoon/fork at every meal since I've started feeding him with a spoon/fork just so he could get used to holding it. He's recently started "spooning' things and can sometimes get them into his mouth. Most times though he turns the spoon over before it gets to his mouth and the food falls off. He also tries to stab food with his fork but it's one of those fat little forks so it doesn't ever stab anything.
I don't have any experience with this, but at DD's 12 month appointment the pedi said we could start giving her utensils to practice with. He said it would probably take her until 20-24 months to learn how to use them properly.
We just started giving Zachary a fork. He still needs help stabbing his food, but he loves using it to feed himself! I think the fork is a little easier than the spoon because if he waves it around the food (usually!) doesn't go flying off. We'll start working with the spoon soon.
DD will spoon her applesauce or cereal by herself and she will use a fork if we put the food on it and hand it to her. She'll hand it back for more. She started this a few weeks ago.
At 12 months, we started using a spoon, and DD could feed herself as I scooped up the food for her. By 14 to 15 months, she could scoop it up herself. At 15 months, we started using a fork. Now she's 16 months and mostly feeds herself but makes a big mess doing it.

I've given her utensils on and off for awhile now. Usually she just plays with them or bangs them on the table. ?Lately I let her play with the spoon more. Like when her food is nearly gone (yogurt, cereal, etc) I tell her to put the spoon in and she gets a little dab on it then puts it to her mouth. ?Less messier to do it at the end. ?
And just this week she's starting to get the hang of it. ?Today she was able to get some cereal in her mouth repeatedly and right now she's trying o eat her meatballs with a spork. (yes I am nesting while she's eating.) I think she even got some mashed potatoes in her mouth too! ?
She's a long way from feeding herself but we're getting there!?
