2nd Trimester

The Dr. thinks that the baby is "upside down"...

Should I be concerned??

I should have pressed for more information when she said that, but I was so concerned over the freaking 12 pound weight gain that I didn't ask. She didn't sound super concerned, but should I be? I don't have any signs of preterm labor...I even had an internal last week and everything was perfectly fine.

I told her that I feel the baby up on the sides of my belly... sometimes down low... When she measured me I was measuring 26 weeks so she then mentioned that I could just be having a big baby.

  • You mean feet first?? Breach?

  • Do you mean "breech"?
  • My baby is "upside down" too - feet down below, head up high. But my doctor said that it's normal at this point and it should flip around within the next couple months. A girl at my work is due the same day as me and her baby is also positioned that way and they told her the exact same thing.

  • If you mean breech then the baby has plenty of time to turn over!
  • I'm 24 w and had an u/s on Monday.  Baby was breech at the start of the u/s and head down at the end.  They move a ton at this stage and it's of no concern.

I wouldn't take issue with how big you are measuring yet either. Again, from personal experience, baby measured 1w ahead at my 18w u/s, I measured on time in the office at 20w, and baby measured 2w ahead at my u/s this week.

My size-related concern at this point is gestational diabetes, but I have my 1 hr glucose at my next appointment, so I will know shortly.  GD can lead to "big" babies and I'd like to get my diet in check if that's the case.

    HTH!

  • No, not a concern at all. Babies flip and turn all over the place. It could be more of a concern closer to delivery, but even at that time they could turn.

  • It is still waay early to worry about that. The baby is still small at this point and has lots of room to move around. I can feel that my baby is transverse some of the time and is laying sideways. And measuring two centimeters ahead is also not a big deal at this point. If you gained 12 lbs since your last appointment, that could easily make you measure ahead, but doesn't necessarily mean your baby will end up huge.
  • i personally hope my baby is in the upside down head stand position come 36 weeks.
  • Right now my baby is breech also.  The dr told me that a lot of babies will turn up until 28-30 weeks.  She also said we wouldn't start planning a cesarean unless I was still showing breech at 36 weeks.  If you are still showing breech after a few more weeks, there are some exercises that could help the baby turn.

I have two fibroids in my ute that could prevent the baby from getting into the proper position and right now she is laying on her back across my ute (not feet first)

  • She didn't really say "breech"... I did say... "do you mean head down?" and she said "uhhh, yeah... but where do you feel the baby?" I told her and then she went on to talk about the size and my diet. She mentioned having a growth ultrasound at 30 weeks. She told me to work out and even said to work out through BH if I get them as long as I am not in pain so she must not be too concerned or I would have expected her to tell me otherwise with exercising.

Head down is the opposite of breach.  The only thing I can think is that she's saying the baby is in position to be delivered and that it's too early for that.  But honestly that sounds like a really odd comment for a doctor to make.  I thougth babies moved around a lot at this stage!

  • I was told baby was already head down at my big u/s, but I honestly have no idea if he's still that way.  I don't know if it means anything but I've always felt him very low.
