TTC After a Loss

do you give money to bums?

there are a lot of bums here, at least 2 or 3 at every intersection.  i do not give them money, but DH always does.

Re: do you give money to bums?

  • You mean panhandlers or homeless people? No, but I do acknowledge them.

  • No.  Its illegal here to give money to panhandlers because it interupts traffic.  I also wouldnt in a big city for fear of being mugged (silly I know).  Instead I donate clothing and money to our local homeless sheltar.

what do you do to acknowledge them?

  • Are you supposed to call them "bums" anymore?  LOL, that's old school like calling them "hobos".  It makes me uncomfortable.

  • ok, what is the PC term for them?
  • No, you never know if they're actually homeless or just looking for quick and easy cash.

  • Haha! I use bums and hobos... but I am really NOT politically correct!

I don't give to them, but I give to other charities.

I guess just "homeless people".  That really doesn't sound much better, though, does it?

  • We have them in South Florida, but mostly they hang out at major traffic intersections, holding signs that say "Will Work For Food" or "Veteran Need Help".... I have never given.  It irritates me.

LOL...not really because i guess it's possible that they do have a house.  i like the word bum because they are bumming money from people.  like when i was a smoker and i would occasionally "bum" a cigarette from someone.

  • I googled it.

It says not every bum is homeless, and not every homless person is a bum.  Here is some 'PC' terms:

    Displaced homeowner

    Homeless person

    Involuntarily domiciled

    Outdoor urban dweller

    Residentially flexiable

    Mortgage free living

Disclaimer: Im not sure some of these would actually pass as PC.

  • Perhaps, the pc thign to do it describe the person first, then the condition... Such as: that man/woman who is currently undergoing a "vocational paradigm shift."

I have to say that I love How I Met Your Mother.  The phrases they whip out crack me up!

  • And to answer the question... no, I give a lot of giving with non-profit charities and do things through our church, but I feel as though I may be scammed by someone on the street.  And I also avoid pulling out my wallet for fear that the whole thing will be taken.

On a side note: I recall classmate from the Univ. of Pgh completing an assignment in doing something that is not commonly accepted by society and writing a paper on it.  They choose panhandling in downtown Pittsburgh, and average some awe-shocking income like $70/hour.  So, why I continue to bust my butt for non-profits is beyong me!

  • I do, but it depends.  If it seems like they're just trying to get some quick cash, then I don't.  But if they're really struggling, like an obvious health problem, then I try to give them a little something.

As for the terminology to use, everyone around here calls them "homeless people;" I guess it's considered PC in Baltimore and DC to call them that.

I met 2 nice homeless people when I was living in Paris.  I was struggling up the metro steps because I had fallen the week before and had stitches in my knee and this one homeless guy was cheering me on.  It was cute.  Then there was this other one that lived (and by lived I mean slept on a cardboard box on the sidewalk) near my apartment and I walked past him every day.  He was definitely crazy; he'd always yell and scream and talk to himself.  It was quite funny.  But one of my friends and I struck up a convo with him one night and he was quite interesting; we were drunk of course, haha!

Sorry for the ridic long response.  I promise I don't normally just talk with random homeless people on the street :).

  • i have offered food, clothing and one time an old pair of shoes that i had in my backseat.  but money, no.

one time many, many moons ago i was in a bad neighborhood and i was helping a girlfriend look for her boyfriend and we stopped and asked this guy who was standing on the corner (don't think he was homeless) if he knew her boyfriend and as he pretended to lean down and talk to us he reached in the car and grabbed my wallet and ran.  it was my bad for having my wallet on my lap but we had just stopped at taco bell and it was still out of my purse.  ever since then i'm a little more hesistant...

  • I work with several organizations on a regular basis helping the homeless, but I generally do not give out cash to individuals on the streets. Sometimes I have things like McDonalds Gift cards to give out or I'll take the person into a grocery store and buy them groceries but I try to abstain from cash. I'm a mental health advocate and many people living on the streets have a background of poor mental health care and I'm really passionate about improving the status of the marginalized people on the streets. Oh and I personally do not use the term bums. I think that it rarely applies.?

[steps off soapbox. apologizes if she hurt anyone's feelings] ?

oh please. not KU. effed up.
