When I see Emmeline, I pronounce it "Emma-Line." Hmm now that I am writing this is it prounounced "Emma-Leen" or "Emma-lynn?"
Yep, my problem exactly! I have loved the name since I heard it in a Ben Folds Five song in high school where it is pronounced "emma-line". I don't like it pronounced "Emma-leen" though and I am now afraid that is the more commom way of saying it!
I would pronounce this Emma-line. I understand how some people would get Emma-lynn because of names like Caroline. I do not get Emma-leen, because to me, that would be spelled more like Emmalene. But I guess it is understandable because of names like Evangeline.... I think most people would pronounce this the way you are hoping they will.

I'd probably spell it Emmaline and pronounce it Emma-line (like Caroline). Emmeline looks more like it could be Emma-leen, but that still wouldn't be my first inclination (and I don't care for how it sounds). Emeline (one m) looks weird to me.

I hadn't thought of that. It would never occur to me to pronounce Caroline and Carolyn the same way (perhaps because I know several of each). This might be a good point.
it's emma-line. look it up, it's an old german name and it's pronounced how it's pronounced. emma-leen would be spelled that way.
I did look it up. Actually, on Babynamesworld.com the pronunciation is EM-uh-leen and it is credited as German in origin. I guess that futher proves the point that there isn't a "right" or "wrong" way?

haha, funny! Luckily I have no silly relatives who have found a nonsense correlation with the name. yet.
Wow, I think I am the only one who would say it Emma-lynn. Like how you would Caroline. However, i have known 2 little girls with this name and they pronounced it Emma-lynn,but spelled it Emmaline.
My good friend had a little girl in September and named her Emmeline Grace. She pronounces it Emma-line. That's the way I pronounce it too. My MIL saw the baby announcement on our frige and said, "Emme-lean, that's an interesting name." My point is that this name is not clear on pronunciation and since that bothers you, I'd go with Evangeline. That name seems obvious how to pronounce.?
