napping in crib vs. long nap

Which is more important?

Almost every day I try to put DS down for his nap in his crib - sometimes drowsy, sometimes asleep. Most days we fail. He's up in less than 10 mins crying. And if we succeed (twice) he only naps for 30 mins. After putting him in his crib twice I call it a day and let him sleep in his swing, where he will sleep for hours.

I'm going back to work in 3 weeks and he won't be able to swing while at daycare/grandma's. So what do I do? I feel like a failure every time I let him sleep in his swing, but at least he sleeps!

Any advice would be great.

Re: napping in crib vs. long nap

  • i think a long nap is more important.  my DS is napping in the swing as i type this, and i don't worry too much about it.  then again, when i go back to work my mom will have a swing for him to nap in (she will care for him FT) so my issue is a little different from yours.  maybe you could try putting your DS in his crib for one or two of his naps, then the swing for one nap just to make sure he is getting a good nap in?

  • My DS was the same way. Then one day, I swaddled him, pulled the shades in his room and nursed him until he fell asleep. I put him in the crib and he slept for a 2 hour nap.  Now he only naps in the crib.  Don't give up!

I would love the official answer to this one too as we're going through the same thing.  I will never understand how he sleeps so well in there at night but not during the day.  Just today I've started to try the crib again for naps.  The first time he was put down drowsy and fell asleep for about 20 min.  The second time he was put down asleep, after his bottle, and slept for an hour.  I'm putting him in his swing the next time since he's clearly tired and I feel he needs a longer nap or will be completely miserable later.  I'm going to try the crib everyday now and just hope he takes to it eventually!!  Good luck!

  • I've had the same issue. My son (21 weeks) is just now sleeping well in his crib at home for naps. I was very concerned about how daycare would go, but after 2 months he is sleeping in a crib at home and daycare. I can't say it's without intervention though, as daycare has a noise machine.

As for napping at home, it slowly started getting better after starting daycare almost immediately and he now takes most all naps in his crib. Our pedi speculated that the issue with a crib at home is that he wants to be near us and "part of the action" (even if he's napping). DS has always been very alert/curious, so it makes sense. And I can reconcile that with daycare by saying that the layout of his classroom is such that even if he's in a crib, he's not far from the action and still part of it.

So - no real suggestions because we didn't do anything other than keep trying and eventually it worked.

This is exactly what I do and it works for us.
