I have yet to see someone explain to me what the problem really is with a used crib. As long as it works, I don't know what the problem is. We plan to use the one that DH's niece and nephew used.
We're using the one that my sister and I used. And our two cousins. Its most recent use was about 8 years ago. My mom, dad, husband and I all talked it over - it's fine.
I would never accept a use crib for the reasons that Darcy stated. There's just too many risks to my. We planned on buying a crib when I got pregnant anyway. There are other areas where we can skimp- that's not one of them I feel comfortable with.

We had my 30-year-old crib from my childhood inspected and painted and use for my son (and will for the next baby) and love it. It's built great. People are so quick to judge "used." Just read up on the safety standards and have it checked out.
It can only be a problem if you don't know the brand and model number or if there is something missing - piece or hardware.
Sometimes there are recalls etc on cribs and if you don't know the model number you wouldn't be able to check on it.
I'm not buying a used one because you don't have to spend that much more on a new one - the one I'm getting anyway is $150. If I was getting a used one for free then I'd jump on it haha
This topic annoys me because I personally think it is really silly to say that getting a used crib is more dangerous than buying new. If it meets the safety standards and has all its parts then what's the problem? You will probably reuse that nice new crib you just bought for your second child won't you? And, your new crib could be recalled 6 months down the road and you would have no warning until you had it in your house and used it. If you want to justify getting a new crib, just say it's because YOU want one, but don't act like people who buy used cribs are doing something unsafe for their children and your baby will surely not notice the difference!
The problem with a used crib is not that it has been previously used by another baby. The problems with a used crib are:
(1) You don't know what happened to that crib when someone else owned it
(2) The crib could be older than you think, and therefore not meet current safety standards
(3) The crib could have been recalled, and because you aren't the one that purchased it from a store, you wouldn't know
(4) The crib could be missing screws or bolts, and you don't realize it.
I would accept a relatively new used crib from someone I knew and trusted (like a sibling). I would not buy a crib off of Craig's List.
Ditto all of this. Plus, without the original instructions, you could put it together incorrectly. I would consider a used crib if it was completely up to code, had all original pieces AND came with the instructions. Other than that, no way. DH and I plan to use the crib we just got for any future babies, but we've also made sure to save the instructions in a place where we won't have to look for them. If things go according to plan though we might not even have to disassemble the crib before we need it again.
The crib I have is 52 years old, DD was the 11th baby in our family to use it. It has been refurbished & is up to the safety codes. I love it & the history that goes with it.
But Ditto to other girls about using one off craigslist etc...
