Car seat WDYT?

We have an infant car seat and one base that we are keeping in the SUV. ?I wanted to get an extra base for my car, but DH doesn't want to spend the money on one and we can belt in the car seat without a base (which I REALLY don't like). ?I had the idea of going ahead and getting our convertible car seat now to keep in my car and use instead of just another base. ?I just feel like they are really big and I know I can't take it out and carry it like an infant seat, but we will need one eventually anyway. ?Should I just go get another infant base, or get the convertible seat?

Re: Car seat WDYT?

  • I think it really depends on how often you will really switch from car to car.  We got an extra base for Connor infant seat and it's still in the box.  We didn't switch the seat from car to car enough to mess with it.  On the rare occasion that we did switch, we just switched the base too.  Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable putting a newborn in a convertible seat yet.  Just my 2 cents.

  • Hmmm, we had the extra car seat base and used it a lot.  I don't regret that purchase at all.  It depends on how often you think you'll be switching cars.  I know some people say they didn't need the second base at all.  And now that Liam is in his convertible seat, we only have one, so we just have to plan ahead car-wise so that the one with the seat is always the one he rides in.

You could always try it with just the one base, and if you find yourself wanting to drive your car some, then get a convertible in a few months.  I personally couldn't imagine putting a baby into a convertible until they are a few months old, I just think it would be swallowed and not have enough head support in there.

  • I agree with Vivian. We only had 1 base... we never really switched dd into our 2nd car and when we did we just moved the base. I wouldn't want my infant in a convertible either.

Maybe just have 1 base for now and if you feel like you want to take him in both cars a lot then go out and buy a 2nd base.

  • I wouldn't spend the extra money on another base.  We only had one base and moved it whenever we went in the other vehicle.  It wasn't that difficult, even with a 2-dr car.

DD has been in her convertible seat since 5 months and we move it between cars too.  I just don't want to spend the money on a second seat.

  • We hardly ever drove DH's care with DS, so we just had the infant seat with one base.  When we did use his car, we just used the seat without the base.  IT IS PERFECTLY SAFE TO DO THIS.  The base is only for convenience.  They are crash tested with and without the base.  I would not feel comfortable with a newborn in a convertible.  I know they are rated and tested for 5 lb and up, but a baby is already so tiny in an infant seat, there's just no way I'd do it.

I would just get one base, and see how much you'll actually be using it in your DH's car before spending the money on a second base.

  • We have 2 bases b/c I don't like taking the one out of my car for the quick trips we take in DH's truck. Something to consider if you just use the convertible seat is you will have to carry your little one around if you use it when you go places. I love having the infant seat when we go out so I can put it in the buggy or in the stroller. I'd never be able to shop if I had to carry Aubrey around all the time.
  • We had a 2nd base also and used it a lot.  I guess it depends on what yours and dh's schedules will be like and who will have her in their car more often.
  • We just have one base and that car always stays where the baby is. We plan on getting a convertible seat for the 2nd car for the future and in case of emergency.

I have no problem putting DS in a convertible - they are made for infants. In fact, I used to work with SafeKids (organization that educates about car seats/installs etc) and they donate convertible seats to families in needs. They don't donate infant seats because the only real benefit to them is convenience, not safety. Its a practical purchase.

  • Thanks for all your input! ?Maybe we will try it out and see how things go with just the one base and seat for a bit. ?We do tend to switch cars a lot, but we bought the SUV with the sole purpose of it being the baby's car. ?Hopefully we can stick to it and DH will drive my car more.
  • We had 2 bases and used both but dh does a lot of the daycare picking up/dropping off.
  • We actually got the convertible as a gift and if not, we would have bought it anyways.  We'll start using it as soon as she's big enough.  DH will most likely drop off at daycare and I'll pick up so we'll need two different car seats.  Personally, I probably wouldn't buy an extra base anyways even if it was an option b/c it just seems like a waste.  Just MO though.
