So I went to the doctor yesterday and he basically told me that everything looks great... except one problem. I really need to watch my intake. So ok, I get it, I guess I have gained too much for only being 14 weeks along (I can't remember what they first weighed me in at but I think I have put on about 8 pounds... which is a lot, I know:() I just really thought to myself... I already feel enormous... I don't have a belly, but my clothes don't fit, so I know ?I AM FAT. I really didn't need my doctor to remind me. I think that part of the problem is that I have always been a "dieter" and fairly aware and good about what I eat. And now, I am trying to eat right, but I am not drinking diet soda or eating low calorie foods anymore because I guess I figured stuff from the earth is better then stuff from the factory! And even if I wasn't pregnant and I stopped doing that I was bound to gain weight!?
Sorry, I just needed to get that off my chest... because then after telling me I am a beached whale (ok not exactly in those words) he also told me I tested positive for exposure to CMV. But he didn't know if it was recently or not, so I shouldn't have to worry. Is it me, or should I be more concerned about a potential congenital defect or a few cookies?? Anyone else have a problem like this?
Thanks for reading!?
Re: apparently and miserably too fat...
It's kind of their job to remind you... that's why we go to doctors, so they can tell us that we are healthy or that we are not healthy and what we can do to become healthy.
If you switched from diet soda to regular soda, and sugar free snack foods to sugar-filled snacks, of course you are going to put on weight. So perhaps you should look at cutting back on some of those things. Try flavored and/or sparkling water instead of soda, and try fruit instead of sugary snacks (the sugar "from the earth" in those snacks is still bad for you - the "from the earth" kind you want is in fruits).
Eating "low cal"/"low fat" diet foods is not the same as eating healthy. It sounds like you need to talk to your doctor and get suggestions on how to modify your diet so that you are getting to eat things you like but not packing on the pounds.
hmmm... first the CMV exposure. ?i work in a children's hosp so have been tested repeatedly for CMV. ?the tests i have had done are called CMV titers, and they check two things: an IgG and IgM. ?the IgG is any exposure (literally, if you've had CMV, which most people had, at any time in your life), and IgM is recent or current infection. ?if you are IgG positive, you have nothing to worry about. ?if you are IgM positive, that could mean a new infection. ?i hope that helps... maybe it is just too much detail.
second, the weight gain. ?8 lbs doesn't sound terrible to me. ?is it possible that you put on some holiday weight and your "pre-preg" weight is higher than you thought? ?i guess if your doc is concerned, that's reason to be concerned, but i wonder if s/he might be just overreacting now to help you slow down. ?i know it is hard to hear, esp for those of us who have always dieted! ?hang in there...
I am sure it is hard to hear, but of course it is for your health and your sake. I am sure he is just concerned about high blood pressure and other complications from gaining too much. I agree with above, are you eating natural things? I switched to full fat butter, yogurt, milk, and cut out processed foods awhile ago and didn't gain anything -and I feel so much better.?
My GF got in trouble for gaining too much at first and the culprit was grape juice! She thought it was good, but it's really all sugar and empty calories. Maybe there is something like that in your diet that you aren't realizing is adding too many calories??
Don't stress too much about your weight. Some people gain quickly early and some gain faster toward the end. I gained very early too, and beat myself up for it. I was also a chronic dieter, and the switch to more normal foods put weight on me more quickly than I had anticipated.
Please don't be so hard on yourself! Your doc is just doing what they have to.
One thing that helped me slow down, I'm down to about 1/2 lb- 1lb a week at this point, was eating more fruit. It's helped keep me full on minimal calories that I know are good for me and the baby. We all stress about weight, whether brought up by our doc, or ourselves.
As long as you're doing the best you can to take care of your body, you're doing things right!
I was told the same thing by my doctor but I had pretty bad morning sickness during my first trimester and the only thing that stayed down was pasta and pizza. After I passed my first trimester, I have only gained a few pounds each month... So I wouldn't really worry too much about it if I were you. Just try and watch what you are eatting going forward and try to make smart decisions.... But, if you crave a brownie or something, go for it! Just do it in moderation.
And FYI, I don't think 8 pounds is all that much either!!
Good luck!
