pacifier?

When did you introduce it? ?I`m not anti-pacifier, but we have been waiting to introduce a paci until breastfeeding is fully established. ?I've read 2 weeks, a month, longer?

I ask b/c DS needs to suck in order to soothe himself. ?So he either needs to be on my boob or sucking one of our fingers. ?Could introducing a paci now interfere with breastfeeding? Isn't letting him suck on our finger defeating the whole purpose of avoiding the pacifier anyway? He seems to be doing well so far w/BFing. ?DH is against using the paci now....I`m starting to consider it.

I guess maybe I`ll wait until after his 2 week appointment.... What did you ladies do?

Re: pacifier?

  • We introduced a bottle and pacifier early on and haven't had any real problems.  That said, my DD can't hold the pacifier in herself.  We only use it if she's really upset - we'll swaddle her and put the pacifier in while holding her close to our bodies and swinging her.  HTH.

  • We introduced one while I was still trying to breastfeed and DD had no problems.  She was 5 days old at the time.  An ER visit caused her to be admitted to the hospital and she needed comforting while the staff were running tests.  It helped to calm her.
  • DS was brought to us in the hospital with a paci.  We forgot to tell them, but it worked out great.  He was happy and we never had a problem breastfeeding.  Our ped told us that there is no such thing as nipple confusion.  Babies will always want the breast if you keep giving it to them.  I'm not sure I quite believe that, but so far, it has worked for us.

  • we introduced it right away, and he wouldnt take it! he has no problems with a bottle but just doesnt like the pacifier! he has no problem trying to jam his whole hand in his mouth tho lol, whatever soothes him for now!
  • Actually the hospital introduced ours when Wyatt was like ?a day and a half old- it did not cause any problems- and actually we gave him a breastmilk bottle when he was about 4 days old... but if you think that he is not doing so well breastfeeding I would wait...
