Yes I am yelling! I took clomid, does thaat mean my children are less natural? what about children conceived through IUI or IVF? Are my children part plastic or some other man made material?

Yes, this is in response to something said in that drama llama post.

  • No, my boys are made of rubber since they are IVF babies.  Maybe they are holograms?

  • oooh oooh... i did clomid AND IUI - so all of my babies (including DS) are really made of silicone and titanium :)
  • I saw that too..It really pisses me off even though mine are spontaneous!! I really don't understand WHY the heck mine would be any more NATURAL than anyone who has gone though fertility treatments!!!!????I was asked all the time If they were natural and It would really tick me off!

  • Guilty as charged. Embarrassed

Of course all babies are natural!! I honestly never heard the term "spontaneous" until I had twins, and the term "natural" is all I ever have had drilled in my head and comes out without thinking. Sorry!

  • I don't understand why people get so worked up over terminology/semantics.  I didn't even notice the use of the term "natural" and had to re-read the WHOLE thread twice to pick up on it.  It was an acceptable term up until a few years ago when the whole natural/artificial war started.  I don't get pissed off when people call me fat and not "metabolically challenged."
  • Yes I realize everyone(hopefully!) knows that all children are natural regardless of how they are conceived, but I sometimes feel like there is an attitude surrounding the whole spontaneous vs. assisted.

  • Yes, it only became an issue in the last few years but that doesnt give it merit, right?

I just think it is an issue of being sensitive to each other and this is the board where we should feel comfortable.  A word is a word is a word but words also hurt and can sometimes carry an attitude IMO.

  • Yeah, I hate that, too--both the term and the rudeness in asking the question in the first place!

  • Yeah, but it only carries an attitude if you FEEL it carries an attitude.  I would never dispute that IVF/IUI/etc. babies are actual babies, and the people who needed reproductive assistance don't deserve to have families and babies and even multiples.  They deserve it the same as any one does.  But words are just words, they only carry the weight you assign to them.  How can you just jump all over someone who uses a term just because it's not a term you're comfortable with yourself?  Is it your own insecurities?  I'm just curious, since I really try hard not to judge people and put merit into what other people say.  Sticks & stones may break my bones, you know?  I just don't think it's fair to make other people feel like an a-hole just b/c you don't like one little word they used.
  • Thanks, I dont have any issues with getting help for my fertility issues.  No insecurities here.

Just repeating what, IMO, is seen as common sense/courtesy on this board.

  • The thing is, why do people ask it in the first place?  Does it matter?
  • The reason many people (esp MoMs) are offended by "are they natural" is because it implies that some children are "unnatural"; simple as that. I think enough people are bothered by it that it's worth being aware of and sensitive to even if you don't "get it" yourself.

    Here's my thought on this:

First off, I don't particularly like the term 'natural' but i am not particularly offended by it either, for one reason:

I believe that people do not mean to refer to the baby as "natural" (or by that reason, 'un-natural'), but rather to the conception.  As in, "were they concieved naturally?" is what they mean to ask.

So, I would be offended at someone being so nosy to ask how i conceived my babies.  I mean, do i ask someone with one baby if they had sex on top of the washing machine during conception?   (or any details on the conception)?  Um no.

But, I would not be offended by a knowledgeable person using a less than perfect term for the way to describe DDs.  What is "natural" mean anyway?  Isn't science part of nature?  Maybe, but if you look up natural, it means "Not produced or changed artificially" for the biological meaning.   ART used to be called artificial insemination, remember?

Life's too short to give a dang about these words.

    Good point!

  • I'm definately sensitive to it, and don't bring up my own opinions on the matter because of that.  It's like talking politics.  I don't use the terms "natural" or "artificial," even though I don't see how it matters.  It really is all symantics and I didn't mean to start a riot.  I just noticed a PSA admittidly yelling at one person who mis-spoke.

  • Personally, I'm more bothered by the intrusiveness than by the term used. The term "natural" itself in that context seems more weird to me than anything. (It would make more sense if they phrased it "were they conceived naturally?" but again ... why even ask?)

  • I actually have twins in my family, so who knows what came into play when my girls were conceived.

Its called being sensitive to others.

Ah, I think I missed whatever started this whole thread. (I looked at the recent post titles but didn't spot the culprit.)
