HSG- what to expect?

I have my HSG on Friday and am so nervous!! Can anyone share their experiences (good or bad)- I just hate not knowing what to expect. My doc has not given me any idea of what to expect, and it is done at the hospitals radiology dept which is scary in itself. How many people are in the room with you (usually) during the procedure? Is there any way to preserve a little bit of dignity or does everyone see everything lol ?! How is the pain?  I?m really not looking fwd to this :(

Re: HSG- what to expect?

  • It's really not that bad.  I won't say it was the most plesant feeling in the world but, it wasn't painful for me.  Mine also was done at the hospital radiology dept.  Take a few advil before you go. It's over so fast that by the time i counted to 20 it was over.  There where 2 People in the room with me the Dr and the nurse.  You strip from the waist down like you do for U/S and your covered like with the GYN. The whole procedure is done in about 3 min.  The make turn on your side but, I didn't have to.

If you have any other questions let me know.

  • Its honestly not that bad. I would say it hurts like a bad period. it take 3 minutes. they put a cathatier in you and then put dye in it. your uterus is on a screen and they can see if the tubes are blocked, etc. its kind of cool to see. its amazing how small the uterus is.

Please also inquire about Hysteroscopy. It detected my uterine septum and the HSG didnt. good luck.

  • it's not terrible. Do take pain pills 1/2 hour before you go - this helps. Here's what happened in mine, which was also done at a radiologists office) - they had me take a pregnancy test (great! more confirmation that I'm not pregnant! -- of course I understand why they do this . . .but still). Then you strip from waist down, and lay on table. In the room there was the radiologist doctor, and the technician. They explained each step to me - I had no major pain, just uncomfortable, and a warm sensation of the liquid/dye itself. The machine was on top of my abdomen - so a bit uncomfortable, but not painful. The radiologist showed me the pics directly, and that was it. Although they recommend bringing a pad with you - it's more for the liquid/dye to drain than for any bleeding (I didn't have any). I was sore for rest of the day, and very tired the next - I think more from being tense the whole time.

    good luck!

  • I have been seeing a lot of posts about this HSG procedure. Can I ask what it is for, what is detects? Thanks.
  • I had one last week and I must say I was PLEASANTLY surprised at how little I felt at all.  I was a nervous wreck going into it and I felt nothing.  However, they say everyone is different and people who have bad cramps with AF find the HSG much more uncomfortable.  So, make sure you take the ibuprofen and try to relax.  It goes so quickly that even if you feel something, it won't last very long.

Good luck and keep us posted!

  • Thanks ladies, I feel better. I will update Friday!

Gabrielle- my doc does it routinely after 2 m/c's...it is an Xray of your uterus done by injecting dye thru the cervix. It can detect blocked tubes or a "divided" uterus (can't think of the right name) or things like that...structural problems with the uterus/tubes, things that might cause repeated m/c's.
