Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Do all kids gag some when starting finger foods?

If the answer is yes, I will feel a little better. I have been hesitant to try anything more than puffs b/c when I tried cheerios and bananas she gagged enough where to me it was borderline choking. I have told myself I'd wait til she was 9 months old since that is what the pedi said. She can pick up cheerios and puffs just fine and feed them to herself.

  • Yes, it took my DS awhile to not gag on finger foods.  I would try the puffs and he would gag, anything that wasn't puree he gagged.  I would generally wait a week and try again.  Eventually, he didn't gag anymore.  I just took it as a sign that he wasn't quite ready yet.  Now he does great!!

  • DH is just starting finger foods also and he gags all the time also. I asked pedi about it and she said it is because they get them to far back which they in time will learn not to do, just watch them very closely.
