DHA supplement?! Do you take?

This past summer at the OBGYN and again when I went to confirm my BFP I showed them the vitamins I was taking and they said they were fine for prenatal vitamins (I'm taking Equate Womens One a Day and then 2 separte folic acid tablets)

Now after reading lots of information on pregnancy everyone is talking about adding a DHA supplement to the mix.

Do you/did you take this while you were pregnant?

Is it something your Dr. reccomended or something you chose on your own?

Re: DHA supplement?! Do you take?

  • I took a prescription prenatal with DHA. Now I take the walgreens brand prenatal which has a DHA supplement. I also drank the organic DHA milk while pregnant. I figured what's the harm?

  • I do take a DHA supp. in addition to my multi-vitamin.

Lots of prescription prenantals have DHA in them now days... so if you didn't want to mess with taking something extra you could ask your ob for one of the new "combo" prenatal + DHA things.

I talked to my doc about it (when he tried to write me a prescription for prenatals and I told him I didn't want any b/c they all make me sick - I'll stick with my multi that doesn't hurt my tummy)...

He said the jury is really still out about how beneficial the DHA supp's actually are but that they definitely can't hurt anything... he said go for it.  So, I take my multi, + extra folic acid + DHA supp. (called Expecta)

ETA: good info from kristen! i didn't know they had prenatals with DHA OTC! That's probably a lot cheaper than a name brand prescription.

  • like hannah I also take the expecta supplement. It is OTC and I got a coupon for my first box from the OB, then every box I bought has had a coupon in it since. I lurv coupons.
  • I didn't take DHA when I was pregnant, but I do now that I'm nursing.  If I am ever pregnant again I would take it.  Like Kristen I take an OTC prenatal with DHA.

  • I did take DHA while pregnant.  MY OB recommended them.  The Equate Pregnancy vitamins do have DHA now, though that's not what I took.

    Congrats btw!

  • I also bought the woman's one a day prenatals (which came with the DHA gel as well). But after 2 weeks of taking them, I quit b/c I was convinced that the DHA was making my morning sickness worse! I called my doc and have been taking Flinstone's ever since. Now that I'm in the 2nd tri, maybe I'll give the DHA a 2nd chance though. Good luck!

  • Mine didn't have DHA.  My old dr in Pennsylvania thought it was basically a fad and my dr here didn't think it was necessary.  I'm sure it wouldn't do any harm if you wanted to switch, though.
  • I take DHA supplements.  I started with a bottle from target, but once I hit about 12 wks, my nose got really sensitive and all I could smell was the fish in it, so I went to the health food store where I get my prenatals and found a non-fish DHA.

My OB said the same thing. "Trendy"... She doesn't like when fads like this hit... everyone takes them when not enough studies are done. Then they come back in 3 years and say the opposite.

If you choose to take them though, Expecta makes a non-fish DHA tablet that won't give you those awful fish burps!

  • I did not and still don't.  I actually only take kids vitamins and was bad about taking those.  DS is healthy and smart and DC I am pregnant with looks well too.  It is a personal preference I think and it is expensive.  Good luck in what you decide!
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

Married to my BFF on 8.13.05 (after dating 5 years)!

DS born 2.14.08. DD born 9.30.09.

  • I had the prenatal vitamins with DHA while pregnant.  Since DD was born, I have taken Fish oil capsules for DHA and an over the counter prenatal vitamin.  I will switch back to the prescription when I get a BFP.  DD could not tolerate any DHA supplement in her food or formula, so she has not received any since age 1 month, and she is doing great without it.

  • I did not.  I could not stomach regular vitamins so I take Flinstones.  My OB said it wasn't necessary and that he wouldn't mess with a good thing since I wasn't getting sick on the Flinstones.
