Does the u/s machine tell the dr or does he/she count for 30 seconds or whatever.
She just guessed at mine today (which seemed high--150/160 at 6w1d). She didn't have any official count though. Just curious how they know the count. Thx.

My Dr. does the heart rate with the doppler. On the actual dopplier it shows what it is, I only know because she showed me a couple of weeks ago at one of my appointments.
On the u/s machine the MFM uses they find the heart and there is a visual read out of the heartbeats. he freezes it and then does something to measure how many are between two points and that tells him the heart rate. With the regular OB they use the doppler and there is a digital readout on there.
If they don't look at the machine's count then they know because of practice...they just know what 130-ish sounds like...and what 150-ish sounds like. hen you've done it long enough you don't need an official count to know what it is approximately. Other girls with dopplers will probably agree that after you've counted so many times you just know what that normal rate should sound like even without counting.
