So jealous of all these early ultrasounds . . .

Man! How are all you ladies all so lucky that you are getting an ultra sound at 6 and 7 weeks? My very first doctor's appointment is April 2nd and I will be 8 weeks along . . . and I don't even see my OB - the appointment will be with a nurse! I am told I won't get an ultrasound until 12 weeks. What's up with that? I wanna see my little sweet pea/Blueberry!

Re: So jealous of all these early ultrasounds . . .

  • That's pretty standard, actually - unless there's a medical reason to do them sooner (ex - I went through IVF, so IF patients often have earlier u/s to confirm/do a head count).

  • I wouldn't exactly call multiple m/cs lucky, but I know what you mean. I felt the same way with my first pregnancy. It does seem like a super long time to wait.

I also ended up switching doctors because my first u/s wouldn't have been until 18weeks.

  • Count your blessings.

As great as it is to see your baby (I saw mine at 6, 7, 8, 10, and 14 weeks), it's either because you had a problem getting pregnant, or because there is a problem with your pregnancy.

Very rarely is it because your doctor is just cool.  :)  So, be happy that everything seems to be ok with your baby.

Good luck, and it'll be that much better when you do see it!

  • That's standard.  I don't go in until 8 weeks (with a nurse) and I only get 1 u/s at 20 weeks unless there is a concern.

  • I had to begin seeing an RE for infertility issues related to fibroids, so that is why I got in for an U/S at 6 weeks.  I get another ultrasound at 8 weeks and then the RE will release me to my Midwives.  If I didn't have to see an RE, my group of midwives would not even see me until week 11/12.
  • It is standard to not see your OB until you are 8-12 weeks along and only get the "Big U/S" at 18-20 weeks. ?Only in cases of excess spotting/bleeding, Infertility, or a history of miscarriage will they do extra ultrasounds.?

Just a question: would you want to pay for all of those extra ultrasounds? Most insurance covers ONE if there is no medical necessity for any others. They MIGHT cover PART of the extra ones, but not all of it.

Another question: would you want a reason for extra ultrasounds? ?Take it from me, there is nothing more terrifying than having to come in for extra ultrasounds because they are afraid there is something wrong with the baby based on other tests.

Yes, it is nice to actually see your baby, but I would rather wait to see the baby and have nothing to worry about, than see my baby repeatedly and be worried.?

  • Consider yourself the lucky one. The only reason I'm getting them early and often is my history of m/c.

  • I know!! Im so jealous too.  Actually I am very impatient so Im anxious to see everything.  My scheduling sounds almost identical to yours !!
I guess we will have to be patient together.

    Good luck with everything!

  • Most Dr's dont do them til 12 weeks. Some dont do it til 20 weeks

I only get them more often because I was told I had a miscarriage at the ER and my OB thought it was fishy that I still had symptoms.

Turns out I was still pregnant but while they found the baby... they also found something in my uterus. (they are unsure if its a clot or if I miscarried a twin)

Now I get a ultrasound every 2 weeks to determine if the mass is getting smaller and if I have to be on bed rest again. Its been a month in bed so far

So yes Ive had 3 (first one not so happy news.... and I have another tomorrow) but honestly Id rather have waited til I was 12 weeks to get one then go thru all this crud and worry constantly that the mass was going to unstick my babe.

    This, exactly.

  • I think every doctor may be different.  i was sent in for my first u/s at 6.5 weeks (no issue that i knew of).  i had an emergency one done at 9.5 (car accident) too.  i can't wait for the next one which i will get at 20wks.
  • There is nothing to be jealous of.

I would give anything to be in your shoes.   Thanks to having had three m/c and now a diagnosed clotting disorder, I will have an u/s every 2 weeks for the first tri.  After that, they will be spaced further apart but still will be regular.

I would give anything not to need these u/s.

  • It's not lucky...those of us who have had early ultrasounds were due to complications and/or multiple miscarriages.
  • I had some pain on my right side that they were worried about. They thought it might be an ectopic pregnancy. So I got an u/s.  then when we saw it was twins I got a bunch after that since I'm considered a higher risk pregnancy.

    exactly.

I wasn't thinking I was lucky and I was spotting convinced it was over.

    exactly.

I wasn't thinking I was lucky and I was spotting convinced it was over.  my OB's normal practice is to do first u/s at 20 weeks.

  • Getting an early u/s is a gift and a curse. I got one at 5weeks days and the ER doc said there was nothing in the gestational sac and I worried myself sick.  Sure my betas were great but I wanted to see something and since I was told there was nothing there I spent days obsessing over ultrasound pictures online trying to see if there was something wrong.  Long story short there isn't anything wrong, I ended up having a follow up u/s on Friday and the doc confirmed that there was definatley a baby in there, heartbeat and all.  I wish I would have just waited then I would not have spent all that time worried.

Diva - you make a great point. I read a lot of information that said even at 6w (when I had my first U/S) that I may not see a heartbeat.  I did scare myself into thinking that I wouldn't see a heartbeat, then I would have to go two more weeks to know if the baby was growing and if it had a heartbeat at 8 weeks.  Everything was OK, and I worried over nothing in this case, so I just need to learn to relax.

I am glad it all worked out for you, too, but it is scary.

  • It's a nice thing to have but the worry I go through every second of the day sucks, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
  • How utterly douchetastical of you to be jealous.

    Big Fail.?

My best friend had her first ultrasound at 8 weeks. She didnt have any complications at all.  No MC , no spotting, nothing, !    I think we are all anxious about seeing our baby and to know that some people get to see it earlier makes  me a little jealous and anxious to see mine.  Its natural to feel this way .  Im sure most of use cant wait to see that beautiful heartbeat!!

  • My doctor is cool! I told her that I'd like to get in before April 9th because my ILs will be in town and we wanted to tell them but only after going to the doctor. She said we'll have an u/s and should be able to see the h/b. I got in on April 3. I will be about 7 1/2 weeks. Just a cool doctor! Downside is that she is stopping ob from July to December. I will be using one of her colleagues for the rest of my pregnancy.

  • My doctor always does ultrasounds at 7-8 weeks just to make sure that theres a heartbeat, BUT let me say this. When they do them that early, the majority of the time it is vaginal and some people spot afterwards. (Me being one of those people) Ive been so scared since yesterday that I said I would wait next time to see the baby until they could do an abdominal ultrasound.

    Just my two sense....

  • My first appointment was not until 8 weeks, and I will have my first ultrasound at 10 weeks due to some spotting early on.  My Dr said they usually don't do the first ultrasound until after 16 weeks unless there are problems.
