XP: Bum Genius Diapers

I asked this on the Canada board but thought I'd check here too.

anyone use these? or know much about them?

they're being auctioned off (brand new from the boutique) and i'm considering bidding, but only if they're recommended by someone i know/trust... anyone?

Re: XP: Bum Genius Diapers

  • We have one.  They're pretty popular as far as cloth diapers go.  It depends what kind of Bum Genius Diaper it is.  There are one-size Pocket diapers (that you stuff with microfibre inserts) and fit 10-35lbs and all-in ones (no stuffing required).  Some are fastened with velcro, some with snaps.  Neither of them needs a cover...

They're about as close to sposies as you can get :)

  • I was thinking about this a bit more...

If you're thinking of CDing, I would look at a trial.  I did one locally (based out of Kelowna, BC)- it wasn't as "good" as the ones in the states (jilliansdrawers.com), but I still got to test out a few different dipes- including the BG.

Depending on where you're from, you could probably find a decent trial.  If you'd like- let me know and I can put together a list of the online Canadian CD retailers that I know of.

What I did was order the trial- see what was missing, and I bought one of each of the dipes that I had heard about that I wanted to try.  I found out that I like fitted diapers that way.  I will still need pocket diapers when I go back to work for my girlfriend who will be watching DS, but for home- we'll use fitteds and covers.

But really- I wouldn't just jump in and buy all Bum Genius.  We have one, and it is one of my least favourite pocket diapers because of the way they fit DS.  It would be akin to buying all Huggies diapers and then finding out that they don't fit quite right and Pampers work better for you....

  • you're totally right. Rachel also suggested that I try a trial size package before getting the set.

We have a local auction from our newspaper online. The whole set retails at $287 and has 12 diapers. The starting bid is $28. I don't know if a lot of people are going to be into this auction, so I was going to watch the bids and see how they are stacking up. If there are no bids/hardly any bids, I figured I might get away with them for pretty cheap.

Still worth the gamble? I dunno.... I was also considering a service too, but haven't looked into it. Now that Danica's weight has plateaued a bit, I can start looking at CDing.

Do you mind coming up with some rec's for some CD brands? I'd totally appreciate it! Thanks a bunch!

  • I would probably bid.  Then wash a couple, try them out- see if you like them and you can always sell some New in package dipes if they don't work.

As far as pocket diapers, the Bum Genius are okay- the suedecloth inner "looks" better than my fleece inner diapers BUT Happy Heiny's fit DS better.  Those are what we have for the One-size pockets.

We have some blueberry's and very baby pockets/hybrids that I bought used off of craigslist.  I really like that they're trim, but not one size :)

I bought a few KCK 1s off of purpleducks.etsy.com that I like as well.  If you can sew- there's a pattern at kaylasclothkits.com for $5 as well.  They're supposed to fit from 8lbs-40lbs.  purpleducks had a sale, so I got 2 diapers for $26.  Pretty cheap!

For fitteds- I love Bububebe's.  They're a bit pricey- so I only have 2 right now.  But, they're one-size and they save us at night.  I use one of them with a wool cover and it's magic!

I have a few used goodmamas that I got a killer deal on. I'd never spend $35US/diaper.  Gah!  They're great diapers too- but I like the Bububebe's better- they're more absorbant and the snaps aren't exposed to DS's skin.

I'm waiting on some goodsprouts and cricketts fitteds.  I had them ship from the states, so who knows how long I'll be waiting.

If you're really interested in CDing, check out the EFF board.  They're a great group of really helpful and friendly ladies.

  • I use the cotton diapering kit from bummis for prefolds.

Motherease makes really nice bamboo fitteds, and also nice one size diapers.

I know I posted on the other board too, but I love the bum genius for going out.  If the bids are that low, I would say go for it.

  • Hi,

I don't personally have experience with any of the cloth diapers, however, in doing some research I found this place where you can buy a trial kit and try out a few diff kinds of cloth diapers (BG included).  They are based in Canada and the prices are also in CDN Dollars.

    Hope that helps!

  • We have some BG 2.0s that we got when DD#1 was about 6 months old.  They were great for us when we were first getting the hang of cloth diapering because they are pretty close to sposies.  We still use them with Sophie from time to time but we mostly use prefolds now.
