Do any of you have mini cribs?

We're trying to decide between the full sized Graco Lauren and a mini crib.  A lot of the Da Vinci mini cribs convert to a twin sized bed, which I think is perfect as long as it last until then.

When do you suppose he'll outgrow the mini crib?

When was your toddler ready for a big bed?  Do you think I can go straight to twin at two years or is that unrealistic?

Re: Do any of you have mini cribs?

  • I have the Da Vinci mini crib.  Mikayla hasn't outgrown it yet, but she doesn't have a heck of a lot of room left.  Granted she's gargantuan and very tall.  I think it should last us until she's a year or so at the rate she's going.  It was a good choice for us because we had such limited space for a crib.

FYI: you probably won't be able to find bedding for it in regular stores, at least I couldn't when I was looking.  We ordered this simple solid colored set online, from a different retailer though (Babycenter, and their store closed):

The American Baby line of "portable crib" bedding fits perfectly, we got additional sheets from their brand too.  It was nice in that we paid I think $35 for the bedding set, but there wasn't much to choose from.  Oh, and you'll definitely want to order an additional mattress pad, the one they give you with the crib is ridiculously thin (1" I think??), this is the one we ordered and even it isn't very thick, but the two together work pretty well:

  • My mom has a mini crib, it would ok for a night or two but too small at 18 months for him everynight now.  He is no where near ready for a big bed yet and our toddler school teacher told us that the reccomendation these days is to leave kids in their crib as long as possible.  We will probably be ready for a twin around age 3.  Cruz is one of the youngest in his class some are 2 and 2 and 1/2 and they all still said their kids are still in cribs.

  • I'm glad you asked this question! I'm interested in everyone's response.  I seriously considered a mini crib, but ultimately decided it wouldn't last long enough. :(  We are super tight on space so I'm planning on buying an IKEA crib which is a standard size, but still much smaller than a lot of the other crib brands.

  • Tillman was almost 3 before he went into a big boy bed.  We didn't try at all, we just had a twin sized bed in his room and would occasionall ask him if he wanted to sleep in his crib or in his bed and waited until he decided to sleep in the bed.  If it was a toddler bed, maybe he would have been more likely to go into it, but we already had a twin and didn't want to spend extra money on a toddler bed.  He was filling up his crib pretty good by then.  I don't think he would have been able to fit into a mini crib at that age.

TTC #2 for a million years: SA normal, CD 23 bloodwork shows nothing amiss, ovulation detected. Next step: ? maybe CD3 bloodwork to check eggs? All out of pocket, so limited IF tests/treatments.
  • We have a mini crib.  The mattress is crap.  Seriously, I hope I'm not damaging my daughter by using it, I just don't have another choice right now.

R is almost out of the mini crib.  I'd say she can use it til 18 months, maybe.   And there's no way she'd be ready for a regular bed, so I think it'd be unrealistic to get your child from a mini to a twin bed.

After three years TTC, four IUI's plus 2 cancelled, MFI (morph, motility, count), maternal age (40 as of 5/12) & former endo, we're moving to IVF spring 2012 (good/avg AMH and FSH). We did beat the odds once, however. DD born after 2 years TTC with clomid and no monitoring at my age 35. Doctors are SHOCKED we were able to conceive. Here's hoping for another miracle.
  • I nannied for my friends' son who co-slept until he was 18 months and then was on the bottom of a twin bunk bed, with one of those mesh guard-rail things mounted on the side. He was fine, but maybe it's b/c he never had a crib to compare it to?
