Childbirth Classes

What kind of childbirth classes are you planning to take or could you recommend?  My ob/gyn directed me to Beaumont's web site, but a) it looks like all of the classes are out of hospitals other than Royal Oak, and b) I'm wondering if you recommend the Beaumont ones or if there are others.  I don't mind going to other Beaumonts but just want to know what you think :)

I would appreciate any advice you can give!

Thanks so much!
Jen

Re: Childbirth Classes

  • To me it was a waste of money, (horrible teacher) we went to 1 of the 4 classes, I know a girl who went through a lady that did it out of her home (I think Beaumont recommended) and it was done in a day and she said it was a lot of fun. The one we went through was in an elementary school in B'Ham, through Beaumont.

  • DH and I took a birthing class through Mission Obstetrics & Gynecology in Warren. I don't go to that OB but a friend of mine was referred there too, and took the class before me and really liked it. The RN from the office, Kim, teaches the class. It's basically the three week Beaumont Childbirth class all rolled into one really long Saturday. I think it was from 8-4 or something, but you get all the info in one day, instead of having to go a bunch of times. They're affiliated with Royal Oak Beaumont too. There's like 7 or 8 other couples, and you bring a pillow for practicing laboring positions, and you get a TON of info to bring home. The RN, Kim, is pretty funny and keeps the mood on the light side. (I even caught DH laughing a few times.)

Wherever you take it, I recommend a birthing class, just so you can know what to expect. I was even present for the birth of my niece and it was still very informative. GL ;-)

  • DH and I took:
What to expect when you're expecting
      Breastfeeding
      Child care and safety
      Childbirth

all through Beaumont.  What to expect and the child care classes weren't really worth it, but the breastfeeding and childbirth classes were.  I've also heard good things about the one for dads, but I didn't get a chance to sign DH up for it and now I think it's a bit too late.  He did find the child care class helpful though, because he has pretty much no experience with children.

Our classes were all over -- What to expect and the Breastfeeding classes were at Troy Beaumont, Child care was in Troy near Somerset in an office building (strange, I know), and the Childbirth class was at the Beaumont facility on Hall Road.  I liked the Beaumont classes because they were all taught by actual nurses who were very receptive to questions

St. John's also offers classes that you can look at online, but I didn't see much for the other area hospitals.

  • I took 3 classes when I was pregnant through the hospital I was delivering at.  I took the Childbirth Class, the breastfeeding and child care class.   I would recommend the first two for sure, the child care class was mostly just commen sense.   But, since I never really was exposed to babies it wasn't a huge waste of time.   I probably could have done without it though.   Once I was in labor, a lot of the things I learned in the childbirth class I forgot, but at least I knew what to expect.   The nurses really help you through a lot of it so if you don't get a chance to take any, you will be fine...  I am glad I took the breastfeeding class though.   I ended up failing miserbly at breastfeeding because my son wouldn't latch at all, so at least I understood how really difficult it can be and I didn't beat myself up about it.   Also, usually at the hospital there are nurses and sometimes a lactation specicialst to help you with breastfeeding too.   Good luck!
  • I will be a voice of dissention here.  I will strongly recommend that you take an OUT of hospital class.  The hospital classes teach you to be a good patient--"This happens at this time, this at that time, these are the rules..." and don't really give you the pros and cons of procedures so that you can make INFORMED choices about your labor and birth.  And, too, a typical hospital class spends very little time on the actual labor and birth process and coping mechanisms for labor...I'm talking typically twenty minutes to a half hour at the end of a one day class.  There are SEVERAL great childbirth ed classes in the Detroit area, and you can choose them according to the kind of person you are under stress, really...

There are at least two Independant classes, a couple of Hypnobirthing classes, and several Bradley Classes.  One of the most important things to know about your birth is that the more informed you are, the more you are involved in the decision making process during your labor and birth, even if the outcome is opposite of the outcome you hoped for, you will be SIGNIFICANTLY more satisfied with the outcome you got.  If you would like some of the contact info for the practitioners I have found to be the most well liked and most informative, let me know and I'll give you a list.
