Newborn hates the sling - recommend yours

My one month old hates both the Infantino and Hotsling that I have and I'm not comfortable with the fit on either.  They both seem like his head's at an odd angle for breathing.  I've watched the video that comes with the Hotsling and it looks like I have it right.  Could I just be positioning him wrong?  Anyone else have these issues?

Can you recommend your baby-wearing method?  TIA!

  • My baby hated the sling, too,  I got a Sling Ezee and it was like magic.  She loved it and would go right to sleep!

  • we used a Maya Wrap (ring sling) with DS the first month or so, and i also worried about his head and keeping his airway open. However, he loved it at first, and some days it was the only thing that worked to soothe him.

After a month or so, he decided he didn't like being that confined, and preferred the Mei-tai. Now he actually prefers our old-school Kelty kid carrier backpack, as he can look around and move more and feel the breeze.

  • I could never get comfortable with the sling, and DD hated it - we ended up with a Bjorn.
  • The moby wrap.  DS #2 LIVED in it for the first four months.  He was colicky, grumpy and grouchy little one.  He was only mellow when in the Moby.

I have a ring sling too, but didn't really like it until they were older.

if his neck is slumped, he's probably in too deep.  try rolling up a receiving blanket and putting it under him.  personally, i prefer stretchy wraps and x-slings for a newborn.
  • I used a sling a lot with my first, and thought I would with #2 but she didn't like it as much.  Instead I have found that I really love my mei tai carrier.  She likes being upright and she sleeps in it a lot since we're out and about.  It is also a lot more comfortable for me than my sling was, and both arms are free-er than they were with the sling over one shoulder.  The only thing I don't like about it is the length of straps needed to tie it- I think I would really like an ergo or beco carrier with buckles.  But this is what I have and it's working for us.

  • DD hated the Hotsling after a while. I could never get her positioned right.

We love the Moby wrap. Sooo much easier to get her in correctly. It's easy to learn and great to use. ?

  • When ours was a newborn he HATED the sling we bought, and it was never comfortable on me either. We had a Mei Tai made by Etsy seller
OhMyMommyClementine . You can use it as a front carrier either belly-to-belly or facing out, on the hip, or on the back(for older babies/toddlers). It was really decently priced and well-made, and I got to choose the pattern.

  • As I was going through pics...I found one of #2 at exactly one month.  He was in the Moby underneath my ski jacket (we were in Steamboat, our yearly vacation):

  • I have a hotsling. It woked great the first time, but I can't seem to get him in that perfect position again. Now I just use it as a holding aid. I plop his bottom in the sling but support his head with one arm. Atleast one arm is free!

I just got a Moby Wrap today and I love it. He's been sleeping in it all day, and it's completely hands free! It's easier than it looks! I was even able to breast feed in it.

  • DD didn't like anything at that age. She hated the Bjorn until she was 8 weeks old, then she got bigger and I hated it. Then I got a Hotsling, which worked for awhile until she got heavy enough that I didn't like the asymmetric weight across my back. Now I use a mei tai most of the time, which I still really like. I use the hotsling (hip carry) when I want to be able to just pop her in and out quickly, like at the grocery store.

So anyway, I'd try both again in a few weeks and see if your baby is happier.

  • When DD was tiny I used either a ring sling or a moby-wrap style wrap (it's really really easy to make one and requires no sewing. mine cost $5)

In either case, I had to keep DD upright, tummy to tummy. She HATED cradle hold with a passion and I've heard the same from several moms I know.

  • I didn't really care for our Peanut Shell, but we loved using the Beco Butterfly and later the Ergo
  • My favorite method:  wraps!

    Runner up: mei tais

Have you tried tummy to tummy?  My kiddo and I didn't like the cradle carry but tummy to tummy is alright in a sling or pouch - just not as hands free for us as a wrap is.

Us too.  Still don't like the ring sling though. It's more my issue with it though as I can't seem to keep it from twisting.
