Healthy weight to TTC

I have read lots about how it is important to be at a healthy weight while TTC so that there are less problems with ovulation, cycles and the whole bit. When I look at my body, I look proportionate, I'm not overweight by the looks of me (yeah I have big hips and am kind of curvy, but curves are my asset since I have no bewbies). So when I consult a chart on my weight and my height it says that I'm overweight and on the verg of obese! OBESE!!! Are you kidding me? I'm 5'-2" and 142 pounds. I have been trying to lose weight but my birth control is making it so that the scale won't move. I eat good (1200 calories a day) and i work out, don't drink or smoke, but the pounds stay for now. Should I be worried or do you ladies think I will be okay? If I need to workout harder just say so Big Smile TIA!

Re: Healthy weight to TTC

  • I think I'd check with a nutritionist/dietician.

  • I think you will be fine.  Sounds like you are  pretty active and watch what you eat.  Some people are just built bigger than others.  Yay for ditching the bc!
Not sure what direction we are headed. Either way, I am up for the ride.
  • I think I would check with your doctor, so that maybe they can check your health and see if any weight that you may have is putting a strain on anything in your body. Otherwise, I'd say go ahead.
  • fwiw, BMI charts tell me I am borderline obese & it makes me howl with laughter.  I have not had trouble getting pregnant & my doctors are not concerned with my weight or any weight gain during pregnancy.

If it really is a problem for you, talk to a nutritionist or dietician.

  • I'd ask your OB for his/her honest opinion. Everyone's body is different so healthy weights vary from one person to another.
  • 1200 is extremely low. I crash-dieted like that in HS and basically became malnourished (lost my period, hair started falling out.)

You should check into some nutrition books. Just to eat the basics of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, complex carbs, etc., you will probably exceed 1200 calories.

That may even by why the scale isn't moving. You have to "fuel the fire" instead of lowering your metabolism by making your body function on so little calories.

    GL!

  • if you are looking at a BMI chart - those are crap.   It doesn't take into account if someone is athletic and has a bigger percentage of muscle mass.   It doesn't take into account a person's bone structure.     Based on that chart, most pro-football players are Obese.    Based on that chart I was still "obese" when I met my goal weight on WW.

  • I am obese with my BMI. I will not lie. I have been trying to lose weight since January to get ready for TTC with no luck really. I worked out 4 times a week for 8 weeks....didn't really move the scale, but I did feel better. I am trying to pick up again this week.

At the end of this pack, I am discontinuing BCP (and switching to strictly condoms since we are not TTC yet)  in order to help lose weight (and feel better in general). Don't beat yourself up over the weight issue. But remember that losing a few pounds won't hurt TTC, even though it isn't certain if it will help or not.

  • I would seek a nutruitionist as well.

Just FYI, 1200 calories is extremely low, possibly bordering on starvation, depending on how active you are.  And if you are active at all - then you've probably successfully shut your metabolism down because you aren't bringing in enough calories to successfully burn fat.

And BMI charts are ludricrous as they don't take build and bone density and muscle density into account.  I am fat and all, but pretty much everyone agrees that my ideal weight puts me in the obese category for BMI/height/weight.  I've got very heavy, large bones under all the fat.

  • I don't really every post on here but I thought that I would let you know what I learned from my personal trainer a while back.  I too am also 5'2, and used to weight about 145.  First off BMI is just a guideline it doesn't take into consideration a lot of things about being a healthy weight.  Also 1200 calories is NOT ENOUGH.  You probably won't lose weight only eating that.  To lose weight, trainers say, AT LEAST 1400 calories a day, so try adding like a apple with some peanut butter or something. you might see the weight come off quicker that way! Good luck !
  • Thank you to all of you who have replied. I appreciate the support from all of you.

  • I would ditto the pp's and say that 1200 calories isn't enough. You should consider adding some lean protein and other healthy snacks. Eating very little will slow your metabolism, so it really has the opposite effect of what you're trying to accomplish. GL!
  • Most birth control really doesn't make you gain weight - it's more that people have increased appetities while on it, so the over-eating is what causes the weight gain.  (I actually gained weight when I STOPPED taking them)

So I'd say it's more likely what others are saying - you aren't eating enough!

  • I think your BMI calculator was off. According to the calculations just did here, your BMI is only 26 which is barely overweight. I think you're fine.
