Dropping to night/morning feedings only - possible?

I've been BF'ing DS for the past year and am thinking about weaning him during the day but still BF'ing in the a.m./night.  He usually nurses about 4x a day.

Has anyone else had success doing this long term... as in for at least a few months?  He isn't very interested in BF'ing at all during the day but is still definitely interested in the a.m. and before bed so I don't really see the need to stop.  I am afraid, however, that if I cut the two midday sessions out my supply will tank.  TIA!

  • I successfully did this at 11 months until she was no longer interested in the morning session (13 months) and around 15 months she dropped the pm session. I did see a drop in my supply but dd was comfort nursing not for nourishment. I think the key is to do it slowly, Dont drop both daytime sessions at once. Cut back to one during the day and then after a few weeks you can drop the second. This way your body has time to adjust slowly and it wont be so painful for you. Good luck!

  • I pumped during the day (while at work) and nursed when at home for the first 12 months.  At 12 months I quit pumping and BF'd DD evenings/mornings.  Its worked well for us.  No supply issues and DD is still nursing well in the evenings and mornings.

  • It's totally doable.  DD nursed 1-2 times a day from about 15/16 months to 21/22 months when she self-weaned.

Just be sure to cut the daytime sessions one at a time and do so 1-2 weeks apart.  The more gradual you do it, the easier it will be on your body and it will allow your DS to ramp up his solids intake to make up for the lost BF sessions.

  • Thanks, that's very encouraging.  He still really likes nursing in the a.m. and at night so I didn't want to change that for him until he's ready.
