3rd Trimester

What was the "worst part" of the birth experience.

This is something that I have been hearing from people alot lately and I wanted some bumpie friend feedback.  Now don't get me wrong, I know that for most women everything about labor and delivery is "uncomfortable" to say the least, but lately I have been hearing conflicting information about the "worst part".

Some moms have told me the actual labor was horrible, but pushing the baby out wasn't what they would call painful.  They just had the ring of fire, but not horrible pain.

Some moms have told be labor was no joy ride, but actually pushing the baby out was exruciating.

This info is coming from medication and natural birth moms.

If you are a first time mom, have you heard any stories about this?  If your are a 2nd, 3rd, etc mom what has been your experience?

I'm not scared of delivery.  I know the docs and nurses will take care of me.  I am just more curious than anything else having no idea what to expect.  Thanks ladies :)

Re: What was the "worst part" of the birth experience.

  • In all honesty, the worst parts for me were the uncertainty if "this" was it. Also the epidural. I hated it. Pushing was the most challenging, but it felt good to do it in a weird sort of way!

  • ?The worst part for me w/ DD was the IV's and all the damn wires and ?the pain post delivery..the contractions afterwards. I'm trying to go natural this time to avoid all the wires, IV's ect..that's how much they bothered me. Actual labor was no biggie but I was only in labor for 6 hours and only pushed for 20 minutes.?
  • My son was born on a Saturday AND a holiday so there was no doctor around.  She came in during the afternoon to check on me and went home.  I suddenly progressed a lot quicker than they had expected and they called her back in.  The nurses wanted me to wait for the doctor and were saying "don't push, don't push!".  It was TERRIBLE.  Once she got there it actually felt like relief to push.  I should mention there were no drugs involved.
  • For me it was 2 things:

    1. Pushing and puking at the same time.

    2. The epi-the cut and sewing. It only took 15 stitches. Holy hell.

I did have an epidural, but it wore off as I started to push. So I pretty much felt everything.

  • The labor and delivery were a breeze. (I had an epidural.) Seriously, I could have gotten my nails done and had tea while I gave birth. (I only pushed for like 3 minutes.)

The worst part, by far, was taking the first post-partum poop. Make sure you take some stool softeners a few weeks before your due date.

  • oh yeah ditto pushing and puking and the post-partum poop, yowza! ?And I forgot about the shakes from the epi. Plus my epi didn't work so I felt all the pain anyways...
  • I'm a first timer, but i've heard from several friends that everything leading up to pushing was the worst part, and actually pushing the baby out was not that bad. (this is coming from 3 women who did NOT have an epi)

  • Getting stitched up afterwards was by far the worst part. I had an epi and didn't feel a thing during labor. Pushing was a bit painful, but bearable to me.
  • I went from 3-10 cm in less than 2 hours, so that was the worst part. It all happened so fast, i barely remember getting the epi.

Once i had the epi, it was cake. We were watching tv as i was pushing, and i ate buffalo wings about an hour after the birth. I never had a lot of pp bleeding, and my first pp poop was not painful at all.

  • I too was a puker during pushing, and that was the worst part. I pushed for over 2 hours. I couldn't feel a thing so it wasn't the pain that got me, it was the pure exhaustion of it all. Once he was out, I still couldn't feel them stitching me or anything,  but the anxiety of the first poo was pretty bad too. Looking back, they had the epi way too high because even the next day, I didn't feel anything down there really.
  • I agree with pp. Pushing and puking were NOT fun! Also, I am very grateful that I had an epi, but did find it really bothersome and uncomfortable not to be able to move my legs AT ALL during labor!
