Breastfeeding

supply dip in evening

The first time I thought it was a fluke, but this is the second time where in the middle of the evening DS gets frustrated at the breast (because he isnt getting much of anything or not fast enough) and screams/pitches a fit and the wont latch back on and we finally ended up giving him a couple of oz of pumped milk and he was fine after that. My supply is usually pretty abundant and I get about 4-7 oz when I pump between feeds. I had pumped earlier in the afternoon...should I not pump in the afternoons since the evening supply goes down? Or pump right after  feedings for a few minutes to try to stimulate my body to make more milk? What can I do about this? I dont want to go thru my small freezer stash for this purpose.

Re: supply dip in evening

  • Nurse as often as possible.  Pump before you go to bed.  Eventually your supply will catch up.  It also sounds like your DS is going through a growth spurt.

  • We are going throuhg this right now too.  I do the exact same as you - I put a call into my LC for advice.  From what I can find online, it is cluster feeding and they are "tanking up" to sleep longer.  I hope to have some answers from the LC to share later today.

thanks! let us know what she says!

  • I spoke to two lcs today and both said it could be a growth spurt or cluster type feeding. Anyway, the advice was to let them nurse as often as they demand and go ahead and supplement with pumped milk as needed to "survive" throgh the fussiness.  Especially since it might only be an issue for a few days.  They also advised to try to pump more in the evenings to increase the evening supply.

    HTH and good luck!
