Breastfeeding

Thyroid meds affecting breastfeeding?

I read in my what to expect book that thyroid meds may prevent you from breastfeeding. I have hypothyroid and take Synthroid, and never even though of it having an impact on whether I would be able to breastfeed or not...Anyone know more about this or have experience with it?

Re: Thyroid meds affecting breastfeeding?

  • I take synthroid (I have been taking it since I was like 13) and have no problems...actually I have an oversupply.

  • Oroxine (sounds like the same as syntroid) to supplement thyroid hormone is fine if you're stable. People with wildly fluctuating thyroid, goitre or other more severe thyroid disfunction can have problems. Also it partly depends on the cause of the  thyroid trouble. My cause was damage to the pituitary gland not the thyroid gland (which doesnt' get the right signals but it is easier to supplement it than replicate TSH). So I am also low in prolactin that helps you BF. But I was still fine BFing for 14 months.

A lot in WTE is wrong or highly exaggerated. They take no account for what is rare and what is common. I remember reading "it could be X (harmless) or Y (fatal)". Thanks, what kinds of odds are there on those?  Turns out Y is less than .1 of 1% so it would have been nice of them to mentiont that don't you think? Idiots.

  • Hale lists it as L1 - the safest categorization for lactating mothers.

    I am the 99%.
  • I'm on synthroid and can feed the octobabies if needed:)  I've been bf'ing ds #2 for 11 months going strong. :)  You'll be fine just make sure to get your thyroid monitored regularly during your pregnancy AND it will get outta wack after you give birth so make sure you get it checked during your post partum check.
  • ditto WantAnotherBaby.

They should test you around 20 weeks pg and up your dose then by an appropriate amount. After birth you go back to your pre-pg dose until they check again around 6-8 weeks after birth. Usually you'll be fine to just stay on the pre-pg dose, but you need more usually in the 2nd half of pg.

  • I don't think that's true...if you're thyroid levels are out of whack it could be a problem. But, as long as you're on the synthroid it shouldn't be an issue.

I'm back to my pre-pregnanacy dosage, and everything is fine with breastfeeding.
