I have used my receiving blankets a few times, but I could have probably done w/o them. We use burp cloths for spit up and real blankets to cover him up with.
That might be a few too many, but it cuts down on laundry when you have a lot because I go through about 2-3 per day. Plus you could leave one in your diaper bag, car, mom's house, one in each room, etc.
I probably have 15-20 and I use them all. I actually had to buy more because I didn't have enough.
It probably depends on if you're going to swaddle, and what the weather is like where you live. DS doesn't care to be swaddled, and we live in Texas, it's pretty warm right now. I might use one blanket every other day, if that.

We have about 10. We used them a lot in the beginning when we were swaddling, but now I only have 2 in use at a time: one on the floor of DD's room as a place to put her down for tummy time, and one on our bed to put under us when we're nursing in bed. The blanket catches spit-ups and blowouts before they hit our sheets.

I got a whole bunch for my shower and never used one of them. I wish I would have kept them in the packages so I could have returned them! We mostly used the regular sized blankets for covering her while she slept.
IMO, there are other things you could probably use more. We had a lot of receiving blankets and we hardly ever used them. Although, DS didn't like to be swaddled either. DS was born right before winter so we used thicker blankets to keep him warm but we also got a ton of blankets too!
