Car Seat

DD recently outgrew her infant seat, so two weeks ago we upgraded her to a Alpha Omega convertiable car seat from Costco, that we recieced as gift from one of our showers.

However, it is really hard straping her in, and it took 45 mins to install in my 96 honda civic,(and that was with the professional at the police station) and it seems to sit her to upright and her poor head has no support when she falls asleep, along with it is bulky in our back seat.

I have seen alot of you  talk about the Britax models.

Could you  all help with websites and sugeestions for car seats that would fit the following needs.

1. Safety

2. Fit in a 1996 Honda civic

3. Easy to install (my mom wants one that she can take in and out  pretty easliy for her car)

4. Wings or something that could support her head better

5. Easy to strap in (if that is possiable in convetable car seats)

thank you so much,

Arika

Re: Car Seat

  • You should look at the installation instructions again and make sure you have the seat in the right recline position.  And then, if your car seat slopes down towards the back of the car, you might need to put something under that edge - I'm assuming you are still rear facing in this discussion - You can use a pool noodle, or tightly wrapped towels.   In ours, there's a line that says it should be parallel to the ground.  It's hard to assess that, but if you get on level pavement and back up and look, you can tell that it really needs propping.   Once we did that, Ben's head stopped flopping.

You're going to be hard pressed to find a convertible car seat thtat's easy to pop in and out of multiple cars.  You're better off buying two seats.

Does your car have the LATCH system?

  • I have an Evenflo Triumph LX, and it meets all of your criteria except that it's a gigantic pain to get in and out.  It doesn't take 45 minutes, but it's definitely not easy in a small car.  It's safe, has head support, is easy to figure out how to install and comes with clear instructions, and fits in my small car (I have a Mercedes C240, which is about the same size as a Civic).

I just had to take it in and out recently, and it probably took about 10 minutes to get it back in.  The hard part is trying to get yourself and the seat in the car and stretch the seatbelt through the seat and buckle it on the other side.  I felt like a contortionist in a clown car, because there wasn't much room to work.  I got it in, but I think I broke a sweat doing it.

The Britax seats are very large.  I don't have one, but I don't know how well they would work in a small car.

  • 1. Safety  As far as I know all of the Britax Convertible seats are highly rated for safety

    2. Fit in a 1996 Honda civic  I have no idea...I think at BRU they will let you put one in your car to see how it fits.

    3. Easy to install (my mom wants one that she can take in and out  pretty easliy for her car)  we have the boulevard, and it's easy to take in and out.  You can either do the latch, or you can put a seatbelt through the back (I can't remember how it's done with the rear facing.)  Does your mom have latch in her back seat?  I think most cars have them now.

    4. Wings or something that could support her head better  the boulevard has side impact wings.  DD always falls asleep with her head resting and supported on them.  Sometimes her head falls forward, but it's pretty rare.

    5. Easy to strap in (if that is possiable in convetable car seats) It's got the 5 way strap, which I think is standard.  It's easy to loosen and tighten as well.
