Mommies of Boys I have a question

Do your boys play with girl toys?  My ds who just turned 21 months old loves to be in the kitchen with me and to me thats very normal. HE is very curious and loves the pots and pans and tupperware and opening and closing the cuboards.      Well we went to this thrift store looking for storage containers/toy box for ds toys . Anyways they had this toy section and they had this little tykes kitchen set. It has a sink, microwave, stove  dishes etc. It was in really really good condition and really cheap. My ds just loved it and started to play with it and imitate what i do with the microwave put a dish in there and press the buttons etc etc.

My dh was not sure what to make of it and was not sure it would be something you would buy a boy.            I told him no big deal but you know men always thinking and or trying to make them macho at a young age or pushing on the sports, lol.  Well maybe not all but most of my dh's brothers  are like that.

So I'm just wondering if there are other boys that play with some girl toys and if your dh's are ok with it.  Is this  normal?  I think it is again no biggie , but just curious.

 Thanks ladies

  • Zachary says buy the kitchen set Wink

No, seriously - at this age a little kitchen set is a great way for little kids (including boys!) to learn about the kitchen!  Zachary has played with tons of little girl toys because his babysitter has a daughter.  You should definitely go for it!

  • How on earth is a toy kitchen considered a girl toy??  Really....I'm baffled.  Plenty of men not only cook at home, but they also do it for a profession.  If the kid likes to pretend like he's cooking, let him!

Sorry you're baffled !  Lol    It's  not that serious now........

  • I have to say I agree with the sentiment that a kitchen should in no way be considered a "girl toy." Heck, DH cooks more than I do these days.

I say go ahead and buy it, but this is coming from someone who also wouldn't care if my boy played with a doll.

  • We're looking for a kitchen, DS has a little set of pots and pans. I find his pots on our stove daily. I don't get why your DH would care, DH cooks (badly) and does dishes, cleans, etc. Perfectly nature for ds to mimic what he sees his parents doing.

  • Joseph loves his Elmo's restaurant, and he loves to play with the kitchens at Kid to Kid and his pediatrician.

He also has a baby doll he likes.

My husband is fine with this. After all, my husband is a great cook and owned a restaurant, and a great dad. Why wouldn't he be okay with my son pretending to cook and hold a baby?

  • DS likes dolls, kitchen equipment, and having his hair brushed.  Neither DH nor I have a problem with this.

Remind your DH that the majority of famous chefs in the world are men.

so true.. why are kitchens always considered a toy for only girls.  it's so weird.

  • We dont have any girl toys in our house. Even when we go to houses that do, my boys arent much into them. But I do remember once, Dylan had 1 of my neices barbies and DH took it away and wouldnt let him play with it. Men can be so wierd! But Dylan didnt care 1 way or another.
  • ben has a kitchen and he loves it!  i have no problem w/ that (or just about anything else "girly") and will certainly be teaching him to cook as soon as hes big enough to start.  nothing like a man who knows his way around the kitchen!  :)
  • we bought ds a kitchen set for Christmas and he loves it.  we put it in the kitchen and he cooks and plays with it when we are in there.
  • I agree that it is ridiculous that a kitchen is considered a girl's toy to anyone.  That's why as consumers we need to rebel against the pink aisle with barbies and kitchen sets and the blue aisles with dinosaurs and trucks.  That's how things are marketed.  Most preschool and kind. classes have a kitchen set of some sort and boys are there as much as girls.  Tell your husband it will most likely be your son pushing his wheel chair and cooking his meals in 60 years so back off!

  • DS had a blast when I visited a friend with a 2yr 11month girl, and he played with 'girl toys', DH saw nothing wrong with it.  DS loves to be in the kitchen with us, DH and I love to cook together, so I am sure DS would love a kitchen set to play with.  I see nothing wrong with the kitchen set up for play, but I did go to culinary school and was one of five girls in a class of fifty, it is more of a guy's field.  I think it is a great thing for your son to play with and learn from.  I also think your husband is being a little silly.  HTH
  • Every time we go to someone's house that has either a kitchen set or a toy doll stroller, my DS beelines directly for it. He loves kitchen sets so much, I really wanted to get him one in a neutral color, but my DH said absolutely not.  As for the stroller, he is really into his toys cars and his toy lawnmower, so I think he just likes anything he can push around on wheels.
  • I can not fathom being married to a man who thinks he has "veto" power over a freaking play kitchen, or any toy, for that matter. ?I plan to buy my son his first doll (*gasp*) for his birthday. ?WTH is so wrong with teaching little boys from an early age how to take care of things/people? ?I am seriously shocked at how nonchalant some of you are over your H's ignorance.
  • DS has three dolls and loves to play with them. He has a Cabbage Patch Kid I got him for Christmas. I will swaddle him with his blanket and rock the baby and tell DS to kiss the baby. DS loves it. I think not only is it normal to play with a doll or kitchen set but it is healthy. DS is learning as he plays with all his toys.

However I do understand that so men have trouble getting over the "girl" toy issue. I did ask DH if it was okay to get DS a doll, of course he was fine with it.

  • I would never consider this a girl toy...? It's  a kitchen. My DH loves to cook and believe me, he is not girly at all! lol  I could see wondering if it was a Barbie Doll, but kitchen stuff? That is def. unisex.

  • If kitchens are girly then I am married to a girl! My DH is a great cook and loves being in the kitchen.  I do want to get Ds one sometime in the future.  As for dolls, Dh and his 2 brothers all had them.  DS has a Diego doll and a little baby.  I think it is crazy to worry about a boy playing with toys that are sterotypically for the female gender!  Come on!
