Re: moms of 6 week olds

  • we have a "loose" schedule....

most nights, DS goes down to bed around 8:30-9pm.  He'll sleep until about midnight-1am and wake up to be fed, then we burp him and put him back down.  He'll wake up again three hours later...so around 3-4am, eat again, back to bed, and then he wakes up around 6am...but he'll lay in his crib and entertain himself for about 30-60 minutes.  Then we wake up...the day we really play by ear.  He doesn't nap at the same time daily.  He usually has one long stretch in the morning, and one in the later afternoon or evening for naps...long meaning 2 hours give or take a little.

Around 8pm, we give him a bath, and start getting ready for bed.  We are trying to keep him up until like 10pm...bath around 9-9:30...this way he'll sleep later into the night and maybe only wake up once, but we haven't had success yet.  He only eats 4 ounces...sometimes 3 sometimes 5 but that's rare so I'm thinking once he starts eating more, maybe cutting out one of the feedings at night will happen?

iMO a schedule at 6 weeks is really hard.

  • My lo has made his own schedule, so we have pretty much stuck with it.  He wakes to eat at 6 and then naps again until 8.  We play until his next feeding at 10-10:30.  He naps until 12-12:30 and then we play again.  For the rest of the afternoon he naps, unless he is eating.  He is up around 5 pm and dh plays with him.  Bedtime routine starts at 7 or sometimes before, if he is showing signs of wanting to go to bed early.  For our bedtime routine, I give him a bath and let him stay in as long as he wants because it really relaxes him and then I nurse him for as long as he wants and he normally falls asleep and is in bed between 8-8:30.
  • I get DD up around 7, feed her and then pump. We play for 15-30 minutes, then she goes down for a nap. I feed her every 2-3 hours with playtime after each feeding. For playtime I set her on the floor for some tummy time, read her a book, or let her look out the window, she loves this. I then put her down for a nap, usually letting her cry for 10-15 minutes. I try to get her to go down at night around 7pm. I start with a bath and then I feed and burp her and then read a book to calm her down. Her next feeeding is at 10pm and then we let DD sleep as long as she can until her next feeding, usually til 3:30am. During the 10pm and 3:30am feedings, I change DD's diaper, feed and burp her, then put her down to sleep.

We are reading the book "On Becoming Baby Wise" by Gary Ezzo and Robert Bucknam. This book has helped us to get on a schedule, which will help DD and us in the long run. I hope this helps.

  • DS just turned 7 weeks, but here is the pattern that he's developed

11:30/12 midnight- feed, DS goes to bed in crib

3am- feed, back to bed between 3:45 and 4

    6am- feed, back to bed

    9am- feed

9:30-11am- happy awake time, turns into fussy I don't want to go to sleep but I am very tired by the end

    11-12- restless nap

12pm- feed, cranky awake time that lasts anywhere from an hour to two

    1 to 2pm-3pm- nap

3pm- feed, DS immediately falls asleep after this feed usually, sometimes it's cranky awake time for an hour or so

    3:30pm- 6pm- nap

6pm- feed, super cranky awake / colic crying time, DS stays up until the next feed, maybe sleeps for 30 minutes

9pm- feed, followed by colic crying time, until 11:30p
