anyone else not doing first b-day bash?

We celebrate several family member's birthdays at once in July. Just a small gathering of family, no one goes over board. Drew's B-day is in July too, so I was just planning on doing the usual thing, nothing special or fancy. Am I the only one not planning on a big first birthday bash?

  • You are not the only one. ?I think 1st birthday parties often get a little out of control. ?

  • We aren't doing anything huge. I'm pretty sure we'll end up with just the grandparents over, and a cute cake. The only reason we know what kind of cake we want is because Dh and I found out we both had a Cookie Monster cake at our 1st birthday, so we thought it would be cute for J to have one too.
  • DD's 1st bday was at our home and had 15 people so I imagine when DS's bday gets here it will be about the same.

  • We are not planning anything big either. Just cake with the grandparents!

  • ii think people on the nest make them a little too "super sweet 16" if you ask me.

i've never heard of them getting so out of control until here.

    nest normal=real life abnormal.

  • Yeah, I think it depends on family in the area, etc. We have no family in our area and DD's first birthday will have about 20 close friends, with grandparents driving/flying in. I'll get a couple of Subway party subs and some beer and soda that we'll have on our deck, and that will be about it. I'm starting to feel like this is inadequate but I've never been too big on the party scene as far as birthdays go...

  • Nope, IMO, big parties are more for the parents, than the kids.  We had a small party for DS#1- grandparents and my sisters, and 1 neighbor and her little boy.  We will be saving our $$$ and energy for big parties when they are old enough to really get something out of it and hopefully remember it- maybe starting at 4 or so.

  • nope.  it was getting so out of hand that i asked DH if we could just 'elope' with DS and take him away for a weekend.  and after that, i cut all the crap.  now we're having both sets of grandparents over along with his aunt, uncles, and cousins.  and we might have the twins from next door over b/c they're his good buddies.

at first his bday party was getting larger then my freaking wedding and i was just done.

  • We'll be in the US so my mom will have a small party. ?I think there will be 15 people max, but honestly we are talking very mellow. ?No invitations, no gifts, just a quite afternoon in the garden. ?But there will be a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for DD.
  • I'd like to have a small family event, but my due date is on her birthday!  It's hard to plan for.  I had DD 10 days before her due date, so planning her birthday a couple weeks early might not work.  It feels weird having her birthday a month off.
  • we're also having a very low key party and just inviting grandparents, aunts and uncles to our house for finger foods and cake. I'll probably make invitations as an excuse to give everyone a photo of DD from her 1 year photos we'll have taken.

  • Quite honestly, I think the 1st birthday party obsession on this board is weird. ?DS will get a cake and a few gifts from us, if the grandparents are in town they'll obviously take part....but beyond that I don't see the point in some big AWish bash. ?JMO.

  • Well. Yes and No. We are flying to New Jersey for a week with the in-laws. DH's family celebrate birthdays that are close together (same month). May is the birthday of my brother-in-law, DH and DD. It is a year of "big" birthdays: BIL is turning 60, DH is turning 40 and DD is turning 1. So there will be a few cakes and maybe a slightly nicer gift. But it will just be us, DD's grandparents, uncle, aunts and her one cousin.
