? for those that registered at WalMart

I've decided to do a wal-mart registry since where I live and where most of my family lives it is the closest/easiest place to shop (i.e. travel time of less than an hour to a store).

Did you start your registry online or in-store?  Would you recommend doing it that way or would you rather have done it the other way?  How much were you actually able to register for in person?  And lastly, if you could do it all over again, would you still register at wal-mart?  (Any helpful tips would be very appreciated!)

Re: ? for those that registered at WalMart

  • I've heard a lot of Wal-Marts are phasing out their in-store registries, so your guests will have to print out lists before leaving home, or order online. That seems like a major PITA to me, so I wouldn't register there anyway (though, for so many other reasons than that one). Though if that's pretty much where all your guests shop, it might still be your best option.

One benefit to registering in-store is you can see the product up close, rather than relying on a tiny image on a computer monitor. ?

  • I registered online, but pay attention to whether or not the items you select are available in the store or only online.   Most people do their shower shopping at the last minute and if most of your registry is "online only," you'll end up with a bunch of stuff you haven't registered for.

I also saw another good tip somewhere on the The Bump that I thought was genius:   If you're going to register for clothes, wait until a couple of weeks before the shower to register for them.   That way, the items you select haven't gone out of stock and are still available.

  • I started it online then went to the store, told them I wanted to edit my registry and went on my merry way.

  • We have yet to do our baby registry, but we registered at Wal-Mart for our wedding.  I would definitely recommend it, being that it is so convenient for everybody to shop there and that the prices are so reasonable.  We did the whole registry in the store.  Most of the items they sell online are sold online only (It almost seems like two totally different sets of products).  So to really make it easy on people I would start in the store and add things from the website later.  That way people have a lot to choose from while they are in the store.  Of course, they do free shipping on site-to-store now, so even items bought online can be shipped to the store and picked up at no extra cost!  We bought our baby bedding already that way, and loved it!  The bedding set we bought from Wal-Mart is excellent quality and we are so pleased with it!

  • I'd recommend doing a combination... we started ours in the store and then went home and edited as needed.  Some stores have a hiccup if you start online and go into the store (Target did for our wedding).  But I agree with pp, make sure you have a good selection of in store items if you are anticipating most of them to shop in store.

THIS EXACTLY!  I won't be registering there (not much I want from there anyway), but when I went in to buy for someone's registry, I was told that they no longer let you print out at the store... but it was a completely wasted trip to a store I already loathe.  I don't like Target's return policy, but I might have to do a small registry there since I think the WalMart thing is a hassle.

  • I had a shower this weekend and everyone told me when they went in the store to print out the registry that the kiosks weren't working and said out of order.  Apparently they are getting rid of their current registry system and they have no idea when their new and improved system will be up and running.  The only way people can view your registry is by looking it up online first and printing it out then bringing it to the store.  I know a lot of people do their shopping at the last minute and won't go home to print out a registry list and come back to the store.  A lot of my relatives don't even have printers at home so they weren't able to scan the registry when they paid for items from the registry.  Needless to say it was a huge PITA!  Forget Wal-mart and register at Target instead.

  • Thanks for all the tips ladies.  I think I will just give everyone a heads up when they ask where I am registered.  Target is out of the question as the closest one to my family is a 2+ hour drive and the closest one to where I live (and most of my friends) is a 1+ hour drive each way and the return policy is horrindous.

I'm thinking I will start in store and add online later-sounds like what most people have done to reduce confusion.  Thanks again!
