belly us vs. transvag us

Hey ladies. I went to doc a little early for some brown spotting (6w5D). Good news...spotting has stopped. Doc did internal exam...closed cervix, enlarged uterus, no blood!!

Only thing....the ultrasound tech was gone for the day, so the nurse practioner could only do a belly ultrasound and not a transvag. So, all she could pick up from the belly us was the sac and the pole. She said it's easier to pick up a heartbeat at this early from a transvag rather than a belly us. I go back in two weeks.....I am hoping they can pick more up on the transvag then.

Should I be concerened that she didn't detect a hb on the belly us or is it a little too early for that....

Re: belly us vs. transvag us

  • I would say too early.  I had a transvag at just before 6 weeks and they were unable to see the heartbeat that early.  At 7.5 weeks it was a tiny flicker transvaginally....and belly u/s tend to be a lot less accurate this early.

  • I wouldn't be concerned - 7wks is really, really early to pick much up on an external u/s.
  • I think it's too early to hear a heartbeat using belly u/s - most don't pick it up until at least 10 weeks I think.

Thanks for the reassurance. That's what I was thinking too...but it's nice to hear some affirmation! GL to you!

  • Just to clarify....my question is in regarding to SEEING the heartbeat. I know it's way to early to HEAR it via belly or transvag.

Sorry for any confusion......keep the reassuring replies coming!

Yeah, I still think it's too early to see it.

  • I had my first transvaginal u/s right at 8w2d and was able to hear the heartbeat, but I couldn't see it. No idea if my ob saw it or not. I wouldn't worry at all. My first external u/s won't be until the anatomy scan at 19 weeks.
  • We saw the hb at 7 weeks with both girls.  Prayers for good news in a few weeks, rest up until then!
  • We did see the hb on a belly us at 6w 2d, however it really depends on how good the equiptment is.  I have heard that is pretty early.  If there is no spotting anymore that is really positive.

  • We didn't even see the heartbeat on a transvag us right at 6 weeks.  My doctor has their own ultrasound machine and they said it wasn't that "sensitive".  So I think it really depends on the machine they use.  And I think PP are right, too soon for a belly us.  That's why they do the transvag this early in the first place.
  • I had an abdominal u/s at 8w0d. We were able to clearly see the HB then, but I don't know how early you can detect it that way. My OB said that you could more easily detect the baby in general on thinner women with early abdominal u/s (obviously). GL to you!

Well I am definitely not a "thinner" woman. HAHA

Thanks for your support! Happy and Healthy 9 months to you!

  • I have had 3 transvaginal u/s and 1 external/belly u/s as 7 weeks 6 days, 8 weeks 6 days and on 9 weeks 1 day I had one of each in the ER.  I could see the heartbeat on all 3 transvaginal.  On the belly u/s they couldn't even see the fetus, which is why they did a follow-up transvaginal u/s.

Basically I am trying to say that in my experience the transvaginal u/s have been more sensitive in these earlier weeks of pregnancy.  I too has some heavy bleeding and cramping hence my abnormal amount of early u/s.  Good luck!
