nms, sorry. But I love Juliet Rose or Caroline. You have some great choices on your list!
I think it's nms because girl names that end in 'ie' or 'y' sound very young and informal. I love the sounds, but it needs a longer/more formal version.

What about Judy, Natalie, Stephanie, Mary, Naomi, Leslie, Audrey or Aubrey? Those all sound young to you?

Well, it depends on other associations, obviously, but to me, Melanie sounds like it should have a more 'formal' version. Very pretty sounds, but youthful. There are a lot of names where the ie or y endings are youthful nn's - Ellie, Katie, even Lilian/Lily.
I love a lot of your names - this one just isn't my style. But if you love it, then you should use it!

I'm sorry. I hope I didn't offend you! I have just never though that names that end in y or ie sound young. I know an old woman named Ellie so that doesn't sound young to me at all. Most Katies ARE young, but Lilian/Lily sounds like an old woman to me. ?
I actually love Melanie. I do think of Melanie from "Gone With the Wind", but she is a great character to have an association with. It was on my list for a girl.

I know that you hate nn's. I would go with Juliet too. B/c jmo, but it seems less likely to be shortened.
Plus if I were to be called by a nn I would rather be a Jules/Julie vs. Mel.
I don't like nn that are actual names. For example, Samantha I love, but Sam I hate. Mel doesn't bother me because she may be called Mel, but won't go by Mel professionally. The same with Jules. It's not a name she will put on her papers in college or a business card. Does that make sense?
Very cute! Our good friends just named their daughter Melanie (born in November). I also have a very good friend named Melanie. I like that it was very popular in the 70s/80s/90s, so I would imagine that it is down in popularity now (but still a beautiful name!).
I LOVE Melanie, and I would use it if I knew she would be Melanie or Lanie, Laney, etc. But I absolutely detest 'Mel' as a nickname. Ugh. So I'm not really considering it, which is sad.

I love the name Melanie b/c it reminds me of a good friend. However, I call her Mel. Actually, I have known a few Melanies that are called Mel.
