I am only getting a bouncy chair, at least at first. I know lots of people who don't use their swings, and I also know people who live by their swings. I also know a lot of people who live by their bouncy chairs. I think it's a personal preference really, and what the baby prefers. But if you don't have one of them your baby won't be crying for it having never had one to begin with.
We just got the swing for DS and were very happy with the decision. I just felt like a swing would last longer, and he would get over the bouncer much sooner.
Sorry I am no help (I am having my first) but you may want to xp this in the 0-6 month board. I am sure they will have some experience behind their answers.
It's hard to say b/c you never know what your baby is going to like. We have a house, but it's not huge and I don't really want a big swing around, so I think we're going w/ the bouncer option. Plus, I really like that I can easily take that anywhere (in the house or out). My best friend who lives down the street from me has a swing that her baby loves (though they started letting her sleep there and now she can only fall asleep inthe swing which I wouldn't want to start) and so I will try hers out and if our baby likes it, I'd consider getting one too.
DD loved the bouncer and did not care for the swing. We got the swing frame that is compatible with her carseat. That was nice, b/c we always set the carseat down in the same place when we came in the house, and it took up very little room. DD tolerated sitting in it but didn't care to swing. We are getting a second bouncer but not a second swing.

I just registered for the Boppy Rock in Comfort Travel swing... it's compact, will fit on a table and just a mini swing. i'm hoping this is going to soothe the baby.. if not, back to BRU for something else!
I recommend a swing. I babysit a 6 month old, and have since he was 2 months. I experienced use with both. He quickly grew out of the bouncer because as he grew and became more mobile, he wanted to sit up and not recline back. As far as a swing goes, make sure you get the full-size one, not the small travel one. The tall ones have a greater rage of motion to appease your baby as he/she grows older. My little friend is growing out of the floor swing. Good luck!

Graco and I think Fisher Price make a 2 in 1 bouncer swing.
