antidepressants and pregnancy

Hello,

Did anyone on here take antidepressants during pregnancy and if so, did it cause any complications with pregnancy or baby? TIA

Re: antidepressants and pregnancy

  • I have not but there are some that are safe to take while pregnant. You should speak with your OB, they will know which ones are safe.

  • I didnt take any but know people who have and have done okay.  There have also been no complications with their babies.  Check with your doctor though.  I know that antidepressants like Prozac and Zoloft tend to be okay.

  • I stopped taking Zoloft before I got pg with my son. by the 3rd trimester I felt awful, and soon after I delivered I was on it again. I talked to my OB/GYN about taking them when I have another and she said they'll keep me on it, and most likely increase the dosage, since your blood volume doubles during pregnancy.
  • I have been on Wellbutrin for years and stayed with my regular dosage during both pregnances.  After I delivered my dosage was lowered by half since Wellbutrin hasn't been extensively studied in nursing women (the studies that have been done were inconclusive).  Once I am done nursing I will go back to my regular dosage.

If you are already on an anti-depressant you may be able to switch to another medication that is more compatable with PG/BF but I know timing can be an issue.  Your OB an/or med-management doc will help you figure out what is best for you.

  • I stoped taking Celexa once I got pregnant. Stayed off till my 2nd tri, 5th month. I wasn't functioning well & had to go back on AD again. My OB & I decided that Zoloft would be best. It is one of the safest to take while pregnant as it's been around the longest & they know the most about it. Little to no side affects concerning the baby or mother.

The only thing that happened was during my labor I lost a lot of blood once DD was delivered & the placenta was delivered. They where pumping me full of pitocin & I wouldn't stop bleeding. They had to give me a shot near my uterus of pit to get me contracting to stop the bleeding. I was warned that excessive bleeding can happen with zoloft. It doesn't always happen but it can.

Other than that, DD is a perfectly healthy little girl. I'll also add that I suffer from Hypothyroidism & diabetes & was insulin dependant during pregnancy & she came out perfect.

If the benefits of taking AD outway the risk I highly suggest taking them. If you can get through your 1st tri w/out them than thats great. If not thats ok as well. I know of a few moms who took them through out their entire pregnancy & have beautiful healthy babies.

  • I took zoloft- my ob prescribed it for me when I went in for a pre-conception visit.  She thought it was perfectly safe.  She also told me that, in my case, the benefits of me being on an antidepressant far outweighed any risks that the drug might pose.  The only side effects for baby that I've read are the possibility of going into labor early and the baby having immature lungs (which would happen if you delivered too early).  My baby is perfectly healthy and I did have him 11 days early (though that's not really early, and who knows why).  I'd say, talk to your ob-it's very important that the mom carrying the baby is healthy, and if they need an antidepressant, that's what they need.

  • I've been on Zoloft for a long time and when I got pg with DS, I asked my OB if it was safe and she said yes so I stayed on but I did lower my dose. They told me that they would much rather me stay on then get off while pregnant plus they knew I was at a higher risk for pp depression because of my history. I upped my dose once I had DS but he was fine and nothing went wrong.
  • I was on Lexapro all through my first pregnancy and during the year that I was nursing her.  There were no complications with anything - birth, pregnancy, anything.  Well, the birth was complicated because she was sunny side up and I had a 3rd degree tear, but that didn't have anything to do with the Lexapro! LOL

I am not on it anymore, but I talked to my doctors about it extensively and made the determination that at that point in my life that small hypothetical risk to the baby (and really, it's a hypothetical one) was far less than the problems that I would experience going off it while I was pregnant.  I'd definitely alk to your doctor about it.
