2nd Trimester

Have to get a fetal echo. Anyone else??

Curious... I'm a little nervous. I have my big U/S next month...but Dr. also ordered a fetal echo.

My DH was born with hole in his heart (corrected on its own) but his baby brother died when he was 10 mos old from a heart defect among other problems.

My OB is just being extra cautious...

Anyone have to get one or anyone had one??? What is the test like?

TIA

Ah, thank you! I usually never look through the posts... there's just a billion a day as so many people post every little thing in the world.... I'll search for it!

  • My sister's third child had a hole in his heart that they detected at the 20 week ultrasound.  She had a fetal echo and a u/s every 4 weeks until the hole closed up on it's own.  She didn't make it sound like a terrible procedure... in fact, she liked seeing her little guy every few weeks.

I had to have one because I have type 2 diabetes.  All it is is an u/s of the heart.  It takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and they look at every aspect of the heart, take lots of pics, and record sound bites to make sure that everything is as it should be.  I admit, I was terrified when we went in for it, but the first tech and the second both said that it looked great, and then the drd. came in to confirm and get a few more pics.  Nathaniel was being a stinker, and one of the techs couldn't get a pic he needed, but the doctor did.
Don't worry, they are just being cautious, so that in the event that something is wrong, they wil be (hopefully) able to fix it.  Good luck to you!

Thank you so much! I feel so much better.

  • Yup I have to get one too, I have about 5 ppl (including myself) in my family who had congenial heart defects that all had to be corrected with surgery, mine was corrected when I was 17 the hole was just under 2inches. Im not too nervous because Ive had many echos and know how it goes plus the surguries now are very high tech - I dont even have a scar from mine! I know its likely baby will have a hole as well but Im very confident it will either close on its own or will be handled by very competent drs. and closed. Dont worry!
