Is bedding a waste?

I'm reading babybargains  and it appears that all studies support keeping soft bedding out of the crib for the most part.  So besides crib sheets, swaddler, light blankets...are those pretty, expensive comforters even worth purchasing?  Thoughts?

Re: Is bedding a waste?

  • I personally think they're a waste.

I never used mine with DD - even when she got old enough to use one, she kicked it off in her sleep.

  • We just bought crib sheets and blankets. I did buy a comforter that I found on sale awhile back at Jc Penneys for $4 but I am not entirely sure we will use it for anything other than a play mat on the floor.
  • I'm having my seamstress make me a custom bedskirt, buying sheets separately and that's it. My mom is making a quilt - by hand, it takes her three months and they are exquisite I'm so excited - c'est tout.
  • Yeah, I'm thinking invest instead (for those in cold climates) in warm pajamas! That and several bed sheets. When babes get sick you may go through 3 in a day, hard to keep up with that laundry!

  • I think sets are a waste. You can't or shouldn't use so much of them, so you're pretty much left with a crib sheet and maybe an extra or two (skirt, valance). You can throw the quilt/comforter over a chair, or on the wall, for decoration, but I wouldn't think it would make the cost of a typical bedding set worth it.?

  • I think i've finally decided against it but that could honestly change any moment.
  • I personally am getting a bedding set from JcPenny's. It comes with the comforter, bed skirt, bumpers, and bed sheet.  I just love it... and figure they comforter will really be used the most when our baby becomes a toddler and we turn the converible crib into a toddler bed. =) I love the idea of making the bumper into pillows for your glidder! I have the rocking chair that my mom rocked me in as a baby! I love it...but it really couldn't use some padding! =)

  • All you need for a bed is a waterproof pad, mattress cover and sheets.  Everything else is discretionary spending.  I like bumpers but they aren't necessary.  I loved the quilt that came with my bedding, but it is a hazard in the crib with young children so I just draped it over the glider for room decor - again, a luxury not a need.

Now you will need light blankets (receiving blankets, swadders) for wrapping baby in while holding her, rocking her, etc, and for laying on the floor while she does tummy time.  And those kiddopatomous type swaddlers and halo sleepsacks are fabulous for keeping baby warm without posing a safety hazard - I would definitely buy or register for several of those.

  • We just bought a mattress pad/protector and this thing that goes under the mattress to protect the mattress from the coils on the crib.

    We bought some sheets.

    We bought a breathable bumper.

I almost bought the crib skirt, but I'm glad I didn't.  Both of my girls were in the co-sleeper until about 6-7mo.  By that time, the crib had to be lowered, so the skirt would have been a waste dragging on the floor.

Definitely better, for me, than spending $300. on stuff I wasn't going to use.

Both of my girls use Sleepsacks for blankets.  Once we convert DD's crib to a toddler bed, we'll get her a set with a blanket.

  • We are not getting a crib set either. We will just get a few crib sheets and maybe buy a comforter later in a co-ordinating design if needed.
  • buying a bedding set is a waste - esp if you will not use it when the child is a toddler... b/c the blanket will never get used, and the bumper really should not be used.

we got a set for DS - but will not be getting them for the twins. With DS after about a month we ditched the bumper and got a breathable bumper - so all we used was the sheet and crib skirt - and you change the sheet so often- it's not like you have the "fancy" one on much.

we're just getting coordinating sheets, crib skirts and breathable bumpers for the twins.

Swaddle blankets ARE worth it - they are not loose/soft -they wrap the baby and make them feel cozy like they are in the womb- and keep them from waking with their startle reflex. I highly recommend the Miracle Blanket- we used those for a few months with DS - he was big and could not get out of them which is key.

you'll want a few light blankets to ues in strollers, etc- but don't need many.

  • I agree the bedding sets are probably a waste of money but my whole nursery is themed around the bedding so I am definitly getting the bedding set.
