Washing baby's clothes

I know a lot of you wash your baby's clothes before you put it away etc., but is it absolutely necessary?  Why...and supposing I do wash the clothes, what is the best detergent to use that will keep it new feeling and looking.  It all looks so perfect I don't want to ruin it!!

Re: Washing baby's clothes

  • the same reason why you wash your clothes before wearing... dyes and other chemicals from packaging, manufacturing and who knows who or what touched it while in the store.

we are using method baby detergent- you can find it at BRU

  • Loading the player...
  • Because it's been touched by a LOT of people, mostly strangers, who most likely have extremely dirty hands. And yes, it is ABSOLUTELY necessary!

    ?

I've been told to use Dreft.

  • We're using Dreft. You definitely need to was the clothes because of all the reasons listed above.?
  • When I think about how many adorable baby outfits I'VE touched in the store, I realize why it's important.

I did a poll about a week ago about detergent-- Dreft vs. other. Here's a link.

Owen Anders: labor (natural onset), failed VBAC, emergency c/s. Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • That makes sense...I guess I should mention that I thought of this question at 6am...and I suffer from pregnancy brain..Smile
  • We bought Dreft @ Target...cheaper than BRU.

We've all been there at this point lol. ?

  • Like everyone said because of the chemicals and dyes.

I use any of the "free and clear" detergent, All, Purex, etc.  Dreft still has purfumes in it and the free and clear ones don't.

  • Most 1st time moms (myself included) use Dreft for awhile.  Then you realize other cheaper brands (like tide free and clear) are the exact same thing without the targeted marketing.  Now I buy just the free and clear stuff and can mix DS' clothes in with DH and mine (yay for less loads).

I always wash clothes before wearing them b/c I think about all the processing stuff and people who touch them and it grosses me out!

  • You wash it because a baby's skin is extremely sensitive, and it takes out anything that touched it during the manufacturing/shipping processes or while it was in the store -- the way I look at it, how do you know someone didn't sneeze or wipe their nose with their hand and then touch the clothing?  Alot of people don't think twice about it, and I definitely don't want to expose my child to their germs.  I washed everything using the Kirkland Free and Clear detergent from Costco.
  • I didn't even know Tide made something like that until after we had purchased the Dreft.  That's probably what I'll get after we go through what we've already purchased.
  • New clothes have that "new clothes" look and smell because they are treated with chemicals (in Bangladesh or China or wherever they were made) to keep them looking that way. The primary preservative used is formaldehyde based. I'd wash them.

  • I'm washing our clothes before baby arrives since most of them were his brother's and sitting in tupperware bins for awhile.  I'm using Purex's baby detergent this time around and I've been much happier with it than with the Dreft I used last time.
  • Yes, it is very important.  The new clothes have chemicals on them that can irritate the baby's skin.  It used to be that Dreft was really the only option, but now so many of the detergents are coming out with dye-free, scent-free versions.  We are trying the All Free & Clear, because it is so much more affordable than the Dreft.  A friend of ours tried using their regular detergent on their baby's clothes, and he broke out in a horrible rash.
  • Dreft works good....I uses it with my son and it leaves the clothes soft and smells like baby powder. I love it! You should try it.They also suggested ALL with no fragrance.
  • I guess I do have half the battle done..any second-hand clothes were definitely washed before they went anywhere near the dresser!  Luckily, my shower is this Friday, so I'll have things to take care of at that point mostly.

Any ideas on washing Bolivian Llama wool sweaters?  My husbands aunt lives over there and sent us one.  I'm thinking of using some of that scent free detergent and handwashing it.

  • We use 7th Generation the kind that is fragrance free... but it is what we already used.

  • I just washed her stuff yesterday since I know Ill get a lot more soon and wanted to get some in her dresser. It is necessary bc clothes are packaged with all sorts of bad stuff (some even have rat poison in the boxes to deter pests) and since babys skin is super sensitive its def important. I am using Dreft but I know some people say it smells too strong and use "Free" detergents. Whatever you use, make sure its hypoallergenic and gentle
  • We use 7th generation the all natural stuff. We get it at Target. I have extremely sensitive skin so we've had to switch all around until I found something that worked. It'll work with the baby's clothes as well. Every mommy friend have mine said not to spend extra money of Dreft when you use any free and clear detergent.

  • God only knows who has touched your baby's clothes, how many times they've fallen off the rack onto the floor, etc etc.

I'm using Cheer Free and Clear. I've heard any type of free and clear is good.

  • We use Kirkland Free and Clear (Costco brand) and will use the same for baby's clothes.

I actually don't think I've ever washed my own clothes before wearing them...I'm gross, apparently :P

But I do intend to do it for the baby's clothes, because of what other people have said.  And I intend to use a regular brand of detergent that is for sensitive skin...I think Ivory has one
