Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

not walking at 13 months

DD is not walking yet... I am not worried- she is close and has been def focusing more on verbal development.  Just wondering how average it is to not be walking at this point.  All my friends kids are walking by this age.

Re: not walking at 13 months

  • DS isn't even close. He was a late crawler (11 months) and he isn't really talking either. He says the occasional mama and recently said dada, but no babbling other than that. His pedi assures me that he's just developing at his own pace, but it's really hard not to compare him to the other babies on here!

  • There is such a wide range of normal. DS is walking but only has two words- uh oh and kitty. No mama or dada which my pedi thinks is odd but normal.
  • Not even close.
  • Not walking yet. I think it's coming soon. She's mastered cruising and is taking more steps now. Maybe by Easter she'll be walking to her Easter basket. She's also not really talking. mama, dada, "ma" for milk, and "mow" for meow. At playgroup today my friends talked about kids not walking until 15, 16 or even 18 months.
  • My DD didn't crawl until she was 12 months, and just started walking a few weeks ago.  She is very good at fine motor skills and understands language, although doesn't say many clear words (she babbles all.the.time).  My DS has always pushed for major motor skills and is already walking.  He crawled when he was 7 months old, so before my DD did even though he is 4 months younger.  He doesn't do as well at fine motor skills though and is just now doing a lot more babbling.

I think some kids focus on one skill set over another, but in the end they all catch up.

  • The range of normal for walking is anywhere between 9-18 months.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • mine only started walking at 15 months. don't worry, esp if her verbal development is good. they really only focus on one thing at a time.

  • Not walking here either just started pulling up this past weekend and cruising has done it twice .. As well she was a late crawler at 10 1/2 mon.. She acutally saw ortho doc because of concern of foot develop and hip and it was all fine doc gave her a great exam and said she is on the very early end of worrying about walking it can take up to 18 mos.. So you have time "we" have time..
  • My DS didnt start walking until 16 months!!!  Our pedi told us they worry if kids dont start walking by their 18 month visit.

  • Ditto everyone else.  My DS will be 14 mos tomorrow and is not taking steps yet.  I don't think it will be long, he's cruising really well and has let go a couple of times, but no steps.  I'm not worried about it, but it is frustrating when it seems like everyone else's kids are walking, and that's the first thing anyone asks when they know he's over a year old.  I think people forget what's normal.  My pedi also said by 18 mos was normal.  DS has been on the late end of all his physical milestones, but is verbally advanced.  But even if he wasn't I still wouldn't worry, as long as he was progressing and developing.  I think you just hear more about the babies who are and less about the ones who aren't.

  • My DS is not walking.  He is really good at cruising but has yet to stand on his own or walk unassisted.  He didn't figure out how to crawl regularly (not army crawling) until he was 12 months old or so.

He says dada, mama, and baba now.  But that's about it.

I agree that it is hard not to compare your baby to other babies on this board.  My DS is definitely behind many other babies on this board, but I'm not concerned.  He is progressing at his own pace.

  • DD did not start until 14 months. She was cruising at 8 1/2 months, but was stubborn and just did not want to walk before she said so.
  • I was told by DS's Dr. not to worry until after 18months if DS still isn't walking.  He is just now taking more than three steps on his own, and is still not willing to walk too far without touching something.  Try not to worry.
  • DD didn't start until around 17 months.

i absolutely would NOT be concerned whatsoever.  My baby just turned 13m 2 days ago he can stand by himself hes not walking yet.  Hes walking along everything.   My older son never walked until almost 22 months we were concerned the pedi had said back then if he had walked by 24m they would have been.

  • Nope-- just cruisin'. When we try to get him to walk btwn us or to something he just drops to his butt. He wants to crawl! He just turned 1 yr last wkd. I honestly am not going to stress or rush it until he's 18 mts. Then I'll google!! (EEK!)

DD is 13 months & is just starting to take a few steps.  My DS was walking at 11 months.  The majority of the kids I know IRL are walking by 12 months, but not all of them.
  • It is not uncommon and definitely not something to worry about.  When DS started walking, he literally went from cruising along furniture to walking around the whole house in just a few days. It happens fast.
  • My son is 13.5 months old and not walking yet. ?He cruises everywhere and crawls at lightening fast speed, but has no interest at all in walking. ?He's stood by himself for about 5 seconds but then drops down to a crawl. ?It is frustrating because everyone from grandparents to people in the playgroup are asking me why he isn't walking yet and I'm like, I don't know!

this is DD to a tee.  she is pulling to her knees now, but has been behind on everything, but catches up eventually :) As long as she is progressing I am trying not to worry.
