Chair Rail Molding? How High?

Hi Ladies,

Can you give me an idea how how high you put up your chair rail molding? Its it taller then your crib? Or below the top of the crib?

I can't decide!

Thanks! Happy Friday!

Re: Chair Rail Molding? How High?

  • We are putting up beadboard with a chair rail molding. My DH says standard is 36 inches, so that's what we're going with. He hasn't started yet and we don't have a crib. I'm sure either way will look fine! Good Luck!

  • We're putting up a chair rail at 36 inches- DH says that's pretty much the standard height. We have the room painted, but the chair rail is going up this weekend.

  • Great! Thanks!

  • just an option .... you could go up another 12 inches to 48 and then the crib would fall below the chair rail.  see how high your crib is and then add a few inches. just looks better visually but totally your call.  36 inches is standard chair rail height. :)

  • 36 inches is standard chair rail height in a dining room.?

I am not sure there is a standard to be used in the rest of the house ?

We had our chair rail & beadboard installed slightly above crib height & it will also be above the headboard in the future

    It looks great this way?

  • Thanks Ladies. I think that is the way that I am leaning, to have it just above our crib. To me, it just looks a little more modern that way. Now we just need a crib ha!

  • I am actually placing ours even with the doorway for a more modern look and doing a stencil between the chairrail and crown molding.

  • The rule of thumb I learned was that it should about about 1/3 of your total ceiling height. ?So if you have 8' ceilings, it'd be 32", not 36". ?But if your ceilings are taller, it'd be more than that. ?You don't want to go too high or the proportions will look off.
