Breastfeeding

**Stacyc625**

I've been out of the loop this week--work has been crazy and I haven't gotten on here much but I wanted to touch base with you since you are just ahead of me on the EPing pump schedule! :)

I'm planning to stay at 3 pumps/day until end of April and then in late April/early May start transitioning to 2 pumps/day. ?Have you gone to 2 pumps yet? ?I'm wondering what you did or are thinking about doing for that transition. ?It seems like a "big" one in that it's more for your body to adjust to. (going from 5 to 4 wasn't that bad on my body but from 4 to 3 was a bit challenging--clogs, etc.--so I'm imagining going from 3 to 2 is going to be challenging too). ?

What schedule are you thinking? I'd LOVE to pump about 12 hours apart--like 10 am and 10pm so that I don't have to stay hooked to the pump so long in the mornings during the crazy get everyone ready and out the door, although I know that's when I'm likely to get the most milk. But really I don't care anymore!!!lol! ?

Sorry....I'm rambling. ?Bottom line: what is/was your plan for dropping to 2 pumps. ?I'm thinking shortening my mid day one over the course of a week or two??

  • hey there flame. happy spring!

the dropping down to two pumps was a big step. I grappled with the decision for a while. I went to three pumps at 8months and about two weeks ago went to 2 pumps. Honestly- if you aren't planning on weaning anytime soon- the two pumps a day is really hard because you lose a lot of milk. (which i was totally ok with)- so just keep that in mind. I wasn't in pain at all. about a week before i decided to switch to two pumps i kept my afternoon pump really short- about ten minutes. i also dropped the pump right around the time i was getting AF so supply was lower anyway- so i shortened the pump session around that time to help with lessening the engorgement.

My two pumps a day i do at 8am and 9pm or so.

I so hear ya. I don't care anymore either. I am so over pumping. I will probably be stopping soon. I have so much milk in the freezer. Well enough to last past her first bday. i am so over pumping.

dropping the middle of the day pump was awesome. Just one step closer for me to fully weaning. I can't wait! best of luck on dropping it.

  • Thanks for the info--that's helpful! ?Yea, I'm planning to try and be done by 1 year. ?So I'll stay at the 3 pumps/day until about 10 1/2 months and then transition to the 2 pumps by 11 months. ?I think I've got about 6 weeks worth of milk in the freezer, although we're starting to go through it now. ?He's taking more than I'm making now but only by about 4-5 oz/day. ?I keep panicking about going through the frozen milk but even if I stopped cold turkey today, I'd have enough for him to get EBM until about 11 mos. ?So I figure with this plan to drop to 2 pumps at about 10 1/2 - 11 mos, I'll be able to give him EBM for the first year (or maybe slightly more). And then I'm DONE!!!!! ?I can not wait to stop pumping!!!! :)

  • dont panic. just think it will be easier of a transition for you when you start to wean. use the milk- that is what it is there for!!

i was so happy to see the amount that i was pumping going down (i had a major oversupply issue for sooo many months)- it was just nice to not have to keep adding to my freezer stash and even better when i was using the milk.

you worked hard to make that stash so be happy your LO is making use of it!!! :)

i initially wanted to pump for a year- however i am now on a week to week goal. it is soooo hard pumping with an extremely mobile baby AND tax season (i am a WAHM/accountant), i might be able to hang in there at two pumps a day for two more months- but i am just not sure that will make me feel ANY better than pumping for ten months-- which is an accomplishment in itself. The 'one year' mark really doesn't matter to me because i have the freezer stash and i have already (in my head) come to peace with if she is getting milk (frozen or fresh) that is all that counts.

  • My goal is one year of EBM, so if I can stop pumping at 11 months, I totally will!!! If you have a great stash and are ready to stop pumping, go for it. ?It sounds like you've got enough in your freezer stash to make it to at least a year if not more. So girl, you've already made it to your goal!! ?Pump as long as you want and then hang up the horns with pride that you are giving your LO a year or more of EBM!!! ?This is why we worked so hard those first few months, right? So we could stop when we were ready and have a freezer stash to use!!

  • i seriously think i will throw a party the day i will hang up my horns. I can't wait. lol.

I seriously had to really convince myself that frozen breastmilk is 'ok' -- i will probably pump until 11 months and then stop. like i said, i am week to week now. i am ok with stopping whenever.

man i would NOT want to ever go back to those first 12 weeks of pumping. nightmare. however it did make the rest of the months MUCH MUCH easier.

just really looking forward to enjoying the summer pump free. AND wearing regular bras again. ahhhhh there is light at the end of that tunnel for both of us!
