NBR: recession, what recession?

*I know many of you and your husbands have lost jobs and other calamaties and I'm not downplaying how badly that sucks.*

I just mean to say that DH and I are poor. We po' folk. He's a school teacher and I'm a SAHM for now. I was poor growing up. So we eat spagetti once a week, lots of soup and sandwiches and go to Ruby Tuesday to "splurge". We haven't had to cut back b/c we weren't spending anyway! Although I do have to say that window shopping just isn't as fun as real shopping. :-)

Anybody with me on this?

Re: NBR: recession, what recession?

  • we live paycheck to paycheck on a very strict budget so we haven't cut back on anything because really there is nothing to cut back on

  • Yep, I'm with you. DH and I both work, but in public service jobs (read: little money). We have no debt (except my student loan) and rarely eat out. We can buy what we need, but have little to spare and there's not a lot of cutting back to do!

  • We are in a similar position.  We decided that I was going to SAH when I was about 5 months preg. (I always wanted to, but didn't think DH would go for the sacrifices).   We utilized that time to ensure that we had the suggested 3-4 months of salary in the savings and that is a huge help.  We had to cut back b/c I SAH, but we've managed to save money now that I SAH.  It's tough, because like many of the pp, DH is a county employee, so we aren't affected like those in sales jobs.  Friends of ours were mortgage brokers.  The majority of their salary is bonus based.  For them, this economy is really hurting them.  We were frugal to start with, so it kinda leveled the playing field.  Plus, b/c the unemployment rate is so high, it's not like they can easily find another job.  The only thing I do believe that makes a difference is the DH and I didn't "over-buy" when times were good (i.e. live in a super small house, own both cars, etc.).  Our only debt is my federal student loans and the house.  So that has helped.
