Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

12-13 month old babies does your baby know how to or should

they be able to shape sort? Stack blocks?  Understand or start to understand what a circle, square, triangle etc. goes into the shape sorters etc?

  • ben doesnt really although sometimes he gets lucky.  and he is starting to really "get" putting things inside other things (like stacking blocks inside each other) so i think hes starting to understand  but isnt really into sorting yet.

  • I agree w/ pp. He has a shape sorter. If they go in at this point, I think it's luck. He seems very interested in putting them in there, but I don't think he is correlating the shapes together yet.

  • DS has been stacking for a couple months, and just started getting the sorting of shapes down last month and putting things into like shapes has been happening last month but has accelerated quite a bit this month. HTH
  • Hmmm, I dunno.  DD consistently gets the right shapes in the right holes in the sorter.  I'm not sure if it's bc she understands or if we've just been so repetitive with it that she remembers what shapes go where, they are also color coordinated.  But last night I watched her put a triangle and a rectangle in the right spot on a toy that she doesn't usually play with.
  • My DS is just now getting the shape sorter. However, he has been able to stack blocks for several months like a pro and has been nesting objects for a long time, even before that. He's very good with blocks and cups.

  • i was curious he started stacking blocks about 4 weeks ago and the past few days has really been interested in shape sorting.  I thought some of it is luck and some of it hes really starting to grasp "where does the circle go"? etc...
  • we have a shape sorter, and DD prefers it without the lid that IS the shape sorter. she takes the pieces out, and puts them back in the box, but not so much the lid. i showed her the other night, and she seemed to get it a bit more, but is certainly not doing it herself!
  • DD doesn't put the shapes in the right slots yet.  She understands that the shapes go *in*, but she doesn't know which holes to put them in.  We only just got shape sorting toys for her 1st b'day, so she's pnly been playing with them for a couple weeks.
  • He finally is able to settle down enough to play with that stuff. Before he'd take a stacking cup, run across the room with it and chuck it behind the subwoofer or put it in the "trunk" of his walk-behind truck. So we're a little behind on that stuff. He just yanks the lid off the shape sorter and puts the shapes in and takes them out. That's about as far as we've gotten.
  • DS has a couple shape sorters. ?He would rather throw or eat the shapes then put them through the appropriate holes.

Same here. I've also noticed DS is very interested in putting the cordless phone back on the base. If he gets it in he is very pleased with himself. lol

  • My dd "gets" that the shapes go in the sorter, but she does NOT want help with it, so she either can't get them in and gives up, gets lucky, or sorts them into her mouth.

She can stack but prefers to knock down things that other people have stacked.

  • I don't know if she should but she sure isn't.  She's just really interested in taking things out and throwing them.

    Ditto this for Ben.

  • DS is just now really getting into his shape sorter. DH or I will sit with him and show him what goes in what and he now can put the circle in the right hole and sometimes the square. Sometimes he tries to put them in the other holes, I think it's interesting because I can see his little brain working.

Also, I just got him block this past week and he is starting to stack. He loves watching us stack them.

  • C got all that around 18m. Stacking blocks was 13m though.
  • My son is good at stacking, but he trys to put the shapes in the wrong holes, he doesn't get that yet.
  • DS does not know how to stack blocks or shape sort yet. Right now blocks are just about knocking down.

  • DD has loved her shape sorter since she was 6 months old...but she, like pp mentioned, prefers it without the lid. She doesn't at all "get" where the proper shapes go. She doesn't stack stuff either and it was noted on her EI evaluation that this is a skill an 11-month old should have so I've been trying and trying to no avail. She just likes to knock over any towers I build.

  • Henry can stack 3 blocks (when he's lucky, haha) and his shape sorter is his favorite toy so he's pretty good at that.  He'll also pick up the circle, or the star, or the triangle if I ask him where they are.
