Books!!!
Kids can never have too many books. My newest fave for that age is "How to Build an A" - it comes with different pieces you use to actually construct the letters.
I even already bought one for DS. I'm keeping it safe for when he won't immediately destroy it by trying to eat the letter pieces.
Anything that makes lots of noise :-D There's a wooden music set I REALLY want to get DS for his birthday....Also maybe some wooden cars (saw some on etsy, Michaels has unpainted ones). I would say books, but thats ALL my son ever gets from everyone.

I agree on the books.
Wood puzzles or other wood toys?

A handcrafted wooden stacking toy made by my DH. *cough*link*cough*
*bats eyelashes*
Seriously, I love the wooden toys we have. They are favorites with the kids too. Toys R Us has a nice line of them. We really love them.
I happen to have one of those (a two year old boy, that is!)
wooden puzzles
books
color wonder coloring books w/markers...they ONLY mark on the paper!
lacing cards
building blocks or legos
bubbles
any Melissa and Doug toy or puzzle
Oooh! I love those and I think DD would like them, too!

Ditto to a book. I'd also suggest a wooden train or one of those rubber-band propelled boats (although that may be better for a little older...)
