Homemade yogurt ladies...

How much yogurt do you actually end up with-finished product from a half gallon of milk.  I assume it cooks down some, but I was wondering how that affects the end result.  It will help me convince DH we should be doing this regularly if I can show him that it's cheaper to buy the organic milk and make the yogurt than to buy the 32 oz organic yogurt (if it really is).  Thanks!

  • I ended up with a ton. Three big pyrex bowls full, I'm not sure of the exact measurements though. At least 12 cups I'd say.?

  • I know this isn't what you are asking, but this is the easiest way ever to do it. https://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/10/you-can-make-yogurt-in-your-crockpot.html

  • You end up with a LOT. I don't think a lot of liquid actually cooks off. My crock pot is usually full of yogurt at the start and the end, so I'd say close a half gallon of yogurt. It is way cheaper.
  • I don't think it cooks down at all. You don't really cook it - you just get it to boiling to kill off any bad bacteria and then it just sits warm all night (I do Brahim's version not the crockpot version). Super easy and soooo much cheaper. I'd say for a half gallon of milk you're going to get about a half gallon of yogurt. It fills my large round corning ware dish when I'm done.
