Horrible subject for a baby board, but....

CAn anyone talk to me about tubal ligation?  I got pregnant on the pill while BF 8-10 times a day. Twice (the first ended in m/c).  DH has brought up getting "fixed" after the twins, and I see his point- 3  kids was my dream family size- 2 was his.   I am not a religious woman but I feel like the most blessed one that ever walked.  I think I am on board with him- and if I need a c/s, and both babies are okay, I think I'll go ahead with it (he offered to get fixed if no c/s).  Can I have your thoughts? DId insurance cover it?  Any regrets?  Thanks!

BTW I feel awful asking this on a baby board, but the few mommy friends I have are TTC and/or dealing with infertility and seems it would be a hurtful topic...

  • I am not getting it done, but DH is going to get "fixed". I still feel weird talking about it, b/c we tried so hard to get PG with the twins. But we don't want more than 3 kids (I don't think we would have tried for another one if Zachary wasn't a surprise).

  • I can't answer any of your questions about it, but we are going through the same thing.  Before we found out about this pregnancy, both of us wanted 2 kids.  Then we found out I was pregnant again, and was so excited!!  Now that we know about the boys, we say we are truly blessed.  DH is going to get "fixed" and he was the one that volunteered.  He said that I was the one that had to go through all of the pain for 9 months to have his children.  So he is planning on getting it done after the boys are here.  I am hoping that neither one of us regret it, but I don't know if we could really afford any more kids.  I want our children to have a good life, and I know that is not always material things.  I also don't want DH working any more than he already does to get food on the table and pay the bills.
  • I had it done at the time of my section and have not regretted it once. I didn't want children in the first place, hubs wanted two. After three years of talking about it, I agreed on one... and got identicals. I didn't care that something could happen to the babies, I knew I was never going to fill up my uterus again, I knew I never wanted to go through HEG again, I knew I was done having kids, so I had the tubal. Best decision ever.

Most insurances DO cover it. It was absolute cake. It added no recovery time after I had the babies, I didn't even feel anything the first day- the spinal kept me numb for about 6 hours after my section. I was able to get up the next morning. You need to be 100%, the OB will ask you again, just before he does it if you're sure and you have to be able to say "yes".

I should add, I was the one that knew there would be no more babies, H didn't really have a 'say' so much. The OB asked what he thought and he said, "It's her body and her decision, I'll support whatever."

  • I wanted a tubal until I was in labor and then the thought that they were born at 35 weeks freaked me out and I thought if something happened to one of them I didn't want to cut off my chances of having another baby.  Also, my OB recommended that we wait anyway, since hemmoraging is so common when the uterus is all stressed and stretched out, and the less she had to do in there the better the chances would be that I'd get out of there without a blood transfusion.  So my DH had the snip about 4 months after the kids were born, which wasn't soon enough.  We had 1 PG scare and stopped having sex until he'd had his zero count test.  Insurance covered either procedure, and the recovery for a man is less than for a woman, but if you're alrerady getting the c/s might as well do a tubal.

    Good luck!

  • Dh and I have talked about this and we aren't sure how many DCs we want but when we decide we are done, he is getting snipped.  The recovery is much quicker for men and he feels the same as a pp DH, I went through the pregnancy/delivery pain so it's the least he can do.
  • I thought about it and then thought to have DH fixed.  I couldn't bring myself to decide on either.  It just seems so final even though we are done having children.  So I went with an IUD.  It's paragard and no hormones are used and it lasts 10 years.  If we change our minds it can come out immediately and we can start trying immediately.  If not then in 10 yrs I will be closing in on 50 and will be out of the baby game anyway.  I just got it last week (them putting it in was a breeze) so I'm not 100% sure my insurance will cover the whole price.  We'll have to see.

Good luck with your decision.  It does suck to have to deal with this after IF.

  • I had it done with my c-section.  For us it was the right decision.  We do not want any other children and that was the perfect time to take care of it.  DH and I made a deal that if I had a c-sec I'd have it done, but if I delieved vag he'd get it done.  Insurance covered mine.
  • I just signed the paperwork yesterday.  I could still change my mind but I think we're pretty set on it as long as I go with the scheduled c/s.
  • I too had mine done after my c section. We did IVF for the twins and then 15 months later ended up pregnant on our own. No more kids for us nd I don't want to take any chances so I got the tubal the same time as the section.
