Obviously there is something else going on there.
I have been safely co-sleeping for 6 months, every night. I know many other moms who co-sleep. Co-sleeping is a traditional practice in many parts of the world. Most co-sleeping accidents are preventable if you are SAFE--no co-sleeping on the couch or if you've had too much to drink, for example.
And until you've had a screaming newborn who won't sleep anywhere but ON you, or wakes up and cries every time you try to transfer her to her crib, don't judge moms who co-sleep.

I often wonder this about some nesties.
While this is the first time I have seen a story of 3 children dying from co-sleeping accidents in one family, I have had my share of experience with it enough to avoid co-sleeping at all costs.
My father was a detective. He was only called to the scene of an accident if someone had died. Also, he often had to witness autopsies.
One day, there had been two "SIDS" deaths of children under the age of 1. The medical examiner decided to do both autopsies simultaneously, so he had to witness both children's autopsies at once. Both cases turned out to be due to accidental suffocation from co-sleeping.
The images of these children still haunt my dad in his nightmares, and it has been years since this occurred.
I will never, ever co-sleep no matter how much my child screams and cries. The closest I would come to this is the "Arm's Reach Co-sleeper" since it is actually only attached to the bed but is its own area.

I agree. This was not a case of co-sleeping killing a baby but of a drunken irresponsible parent putting her children in danger. That child was smashed face down into the corner of the sofa. That's not co-sleeping that's blatent neglect. The odds are good she passed out on top of that poor baby.
There are studies that show that sids rates are actually lower in cosleeping situations than in non cosleeping babies. Here's what Dr. Sears has to say on the subject: https://askdrsears.com/html/10/t102200.asp. Many cases of co-sleeping deaths are caused by completely unsafe sleeping practices by parents who aren't educated properly on sleeping safety. If you put your baby down in their crib with a pillow a bunch of stuffed animals and a blanket there's a good chance they're going to smother too. It's all about safety here.
I don't co-sleep but I've done my research.
Yes to all of this.
