Can you buy just egg whites?

Sorry, dumb question.  I always buy regular eggs, but I know there are the egg beaters type products, so I was wondering if you could buy just the whites.

I'm making two angel food cakes this weekend, and at 12 egg whites each, I'm not looking forward to separating them all and wasting all the yolks.

Re: Can you buy just egg whites?

  • Egg beaters are just egg whites, but they color them yellow, which probably wouldn't look too pretty in your cake!

  • I think you can get them without the yellow dye also.

  • Our grocery stores carry egg whites in a carton, right next to the Egg Beaters.

  • Yes, They have cartons in the dairy section that are called Egg Whites.  I have used them for baking and for regular omlettes.  They are like $3 a carton I think.
  • I know it would be a PITA to do it, but at least it would be a lot cheaper!

  • Egg Beaters does make an "All Whites" carton, but I was very disappointed - I bought them to make meringue cookies but then found on their website that they say they're NOT for things like meringues.  I'm not entirely sure what angel food uses egg whites for (I've only made it with a box ;o) ), but be careful using the pre-separated kinds.
  • Okay, I guess I will be separating 24 eggs.  Thank you guys!
