Not only does it matter how much you make and where you live, but you also have to consider what you had to spend to make that income. For example, DH and I are both attorneys and combined our income is great, but student loan and other debts accumulated while in school eat up most of what we make.
Omg DDK513! Again...in Indiana I live in a 1500 sq. ft. house on about 1/4 an acre and we paid $135k! And its a nice house (lots of upgrades like wood floors, stainless steel appliances and granite in the kitchen and baths) and in a nice neighborhood too! I'm thankful to live in podunk Indy, lol.

Yep - and keep in mind 500K is on the low-end for where I live. The house is from 1954 and we basically have to spend almost 50K to upgrade everything.
Our 2 bed 2 bath condo was 320K here in CA! you have to make 6 figures to survive here! i wanna move!
yes indeed. as another so cal girl we just paid 545 for an old, rundown 720 sf house on 5500 sf lot (west side of LA) my dh and I make about 200k together and we are defnitely not rich. we both drive 12 year old cars and don't really spend on lots of stuff. it's always funny to read posts like this and see the perspectives from different parts of the country. what a difference!!
what part of jersey did you get a condo THAT cheap??? Around here condos are about the same as small houses- and you'd be lucky to find one in the high 200's. We paid $389K for our tiny 1400 sf house- and everyone thought we got a great deal on that, since it was one of the only houses in our town under 400K. most are 800K+. I'm in Morris Co.
My dh and i have nice salaries- but not much left over at the end of the month- thanks to high COL and law school loans, and stupid debt we racked up when in our stupid 20's.

Podunk Indy...ha ha...I grew up in Greenwood. So I know what you mean.
But as for houses....it is truly amazing what location can do to the price. We have a couple of them.....don't ask...but one if FL was $120K - 2100 sq ft., one in IN built brand new to my liking $160 - 2300 sq ft, one in Seattle - Brady Bunch style $400K 2000 sq ft and now the house in Savannah 2900 sq ft, brand new and gorgeous in a golf course community $260K. It is NUTS!

It's so hard for me to stomach these numbers... it really is insane what location does for cost of living.
Back when I had a career, I made $60K and lived in Massachusetts. It was enough to get by, but I didn't exactly feel like I was making a decent salary... things were pretty tight, and I wasn't going on vacations, going out a lot, or buying nice clothes, etc.
Then... I got transferred to podunk Indiana (lateral move) and I practically felt like I was rich! I bought a pretty nice 1800 sq ft house (for only $115K!!!) and had plenty of money left over. In fact, my mortgage payment was less than the rent I paid at my craptastic apt. in Mass. The cost of living was so low that for once in my life, I felt like I had money... it is amazing how much different the same salary felt in two different places!
We have about 1300 square feet we bought for 68k. It's not by any means a mansion, but it fits our little family And we totally renovated the inside, plus its in a great little neighborhood, where you can leave your doors unlocked (which I definitely DON'T do, but the option is there if you are very trusting lol).
The 1200 square foot condo we just moved out of is worth $750,000 on zillow.com. The one across the street recently sold for $650 and it had one less bedroom. We are in a house now and I can tell you there is nothing out here that is decent for under $400K. We think anything under that is "so cheap". LOL. Hubby makes 6 figures and I was recently laid off. I feel poor right now and that sucks, since hubby makes such good money. We just dont have enough "extra" money like we used to. Crazy CA prices.

AMEN. We live in Westchester and just paid $500K for a 1200sq-ft house on 1/4 acre.
160K ?? I would kill for that!

VERY true. Wheras in Indiana...$40k is not too shabby. I mean its definitely middle class, but absolutely sufficient.

You paid 160K for your condo and you think that's HIGH?! My God, that'd be a steal in CT.
Burlington County...it gets cheaper the more South you go! However, it also gets more rural and remote.

This post almost makes me happy to live in Ohio.

AND in Indiana, my 1200 square foot house cost under $100K. ($500K?! For 1200 square feet?! Yikes!)
Living in our town you're looking at at least 500k for a 'fixer upper' 2 bedroom shack.
