Pregnant after a Loss

24oz of water before 1st u/s? HELP

So I have my first u/s at 9:50 this morning. My instructions said to drink three 8 oz glasses of water an hour before your appt and not to pee.

First of all, I can barely drink water b/c I feel so nauseous and it makes me feel worse.

Secondly, if I drank that much water there is no way that I could hold my pee for an hour!

Any advice?

  • What?  How far along are you?  If you are early and are having a vaginal they always have you EMPTY your bladder.  I would call and see if there was a mistake in the instructions you were given.

  • Wow seriously??  My OB made sure I emptied my bladder before the u/s so I wouldn't be uncomfortable.  If I were you, I would try to drink as much as you can without puking as close to the u/s as possible.  I'm with you, I don't think I could drink that much water without peeing and puking!

  • I have a feeling they will tell me to empty my bladder b/c its going to be too full. I read the instructions a few times and it clearly says, "if you are under 3 months, follow these instructions"
  • They told you to drink water at 7 weeks?  So far the only u/s I have had to drink water at was my big u/s.

Anyway I had to drink 30 oz of water, it was difficult, but I pretty much walked around w/ a glass of water all morning.  But no m/s to content with at 20 weeks.  And really all I could think about during the u/s was when can I get up to pee!

  • That is really odd.  I had weekly u/s from 5 weeks to 12 weeks and never had to drink any water.  Sorry they are putting you through that :(
  • it's dumb. it's a matter of procedure. i had mine done at a hospital & the tech has to try to do one externally first.  then they let you empty your bladder so that u are comfortable & then do the internal.

i wouldn't worry about it too much.  maybe try to drink 1/2 the water.  this early, a full bladder just makes for what the u/s tech at mine a "window" to the uterus so they can try to see something w/o calling the dr in for an internal.  so drink what u know u can hold (from both ends) and let it be.  they'll have to do an internal this early anyway.

  • I had to drink water like that at my first u/s (7.5 weeks) and for my NT scan (13 weeks) both of my u/s were external. I have found that if I drink 16oz 1 hr before my appointment it is normally enough although I do have to pee like a race horse but normally having drank that much water I can go pee before the u/s and my bladder will still be full enough for her to do the u/s. Apparently having a full bladder pushes up the uterus so that the techs can see everything better.

  • Drink about a glass an hour before hand and then drink the rest while on your way there.  And it doesn't have to be water - it can be something that sits in your stomach better, juice or ginger ale.

For my early u/s, they tried externally but couldn't get a good shot, so I had to empty my bladder and then had a trans-vag.  Same thing for my 12 week - although they had me pee for the count of 20 and then try again externally.  That was painful!!!

    Good luck!!!

  • your first u/s that early requires an empty bladder  not a full one.  By chance they gave you the wrong instructions..  at this stage your UT is very low and barried behind your pelivs so internals are about the norm....but maybe call and check..

    Good Luck BTW!!

  • That is just plain mean!  I have never been told to drink a certain amount of water before an u/s and I had one at 6 wks, 9 wks, 12 wks, and now 18 wks.  In fact, before my u/s at 6 and 9 wks I was told to empty my bladder so I am comfortable and because it is an internal u/s it needed to be empty.  Granted I drink a ton of water (approx 80-100 oz) a day, but I am also peeing allll the time.  Good luck!
  • I had to drink 32 oz! It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be, although I really had to pee.  I was 6wk3d and they did abd us first, then I got to go pee then they did trans vag.  I was surprised they did abd, but whatever. I wasn't sure why I had to have a full bladder either, but obv bc they did both.  Good luck.  FWIW, the tech said "wow, your bladder IS really full" so maybe you don't really need to drink THAT much :)

  • They had me drink water (16oz) because they tried a regular u/s first. Then I emptied my bladder and they did the vaginal one. She was laughing at how full my bladder was when she saw it on the u/s!
