No need for special detergent? Is this true?

I was reading today in "What to expect during the 1st year" that baby detergent is not necessary for most babies.  They suggest that you wash one tiny shirt with your own laundry and put it on your baby and monitor them closely to see if it bothers them.

That's interesting, I had always thought you needed the expensive special baby detergent.  I'm planning on washing the bedding/newborn stuff/towels with Dreft because I already have some, but I'll definately try this out.

  • I think you only need special detergent if your child has allergies.  I'm just using All Free & Clear or Tide Free & Clear (whatever is on sale).  I am going to wash baby clothes separate though because DH works in a factory and his clothes get a lot of dirt and grease on them.

  • I'm so glad you asked this. I pulled all my NB & 0-3 clothes tonite to wash them this weekend and I was wondering the same thing. I have some Dreft from my shower but I was hoping I wouldn't need to buy this everytime.

  • True for most babies. And Dreft is awful for lots of kids - it's full of perfumes and preservatives. We use Seventh Generation for the whole family.

  • We use Tide Original and have never had any problems.  I honestly can't be bothered to use expensive "baby" detergent.  Use something 'free and clear' if your worried about it.

Ditto this... I already wash our clothes separately and will continue to do so with LO's clothes as well!

  • We use the Kirkland Free and Clear (Costco brand) for our own clothes and I've been washing the baby's stuff in it, too.  I don't like Dreft - it's all hype.  It's got a bunch of stuff in it that can trigger allergies.
  • I actually used the Arm and Hammer Free which is dermatologist tested.
  • We use ALL Free and Clear because some detergents give me a rash, so that is what i will use for the babies clothes as well. IMO i think the free and clear kind is better than dreft, because dreft has purfumes in it.

My future mother in law insisted that i use dreft, so i put some on my registry just to make her happy. If I don't get any at the shower i'm not buying any myself

  • We use ALL Free and DS never had a problem.

  • Dreft is a HEAVILY perfumed scam. Do not fall for it.
  • Yeah, no expensive Dreft for me, just free and clear detergent.

  • I used Dreft at first because my MIL bought some, but it's completely unnecessary, and full of perfumes. We used All Free and Clear after that (and still use it today).

I did this. I bought Tide, though, because it was on sale. You don't need Dreft now that they have all those dye free, perfume free ones out there. I think we'll use the Tide Free stuff for awhile. If it doesn't cost more than what we normally pay for laundry soap, we'll keep using it (or something like it).

We wash the baby stuff with our normal clothes unless there's something really dirty in there, like if DH spills food on his clothes at work (bar server).
